D'uccle Thread

One more hatched...another all black. I know there are no possiblities of a "secret father". I find this puzzling!

Do you know the history of these Milles you have??? Unless they are bred for generations you never know what color genes could be hiding. Get some better quality from a breeder and most likely you will get 100% milles(I dont rmember seeing where you got yours from). I had a couple hatchery Milles that happened to be great lookers but the gene quality must not have been as good. They were combined with SQ Milles and i still got a couple oddballs. Dont let it frustrate or puzzle you. Its genetics!!

....this is what i got..........

She is adorable! I got these Millies from one of the top breeders in Wisconsin. I have been to his place and his birds are phenomenal. He has been raising them for generations.

One thing I did do was different this time was I ran a course of antibiotics about a week prior to collection. I had some sneezers and didn't want to risk a whole flock illness so I preventatively treated the whole flock. I wonder if this had anything to do with the colorization of these babies.

One other possibility is I had a broody sizzle in the pen with them. She is a grey color. She had hunkered down there and wouldn't budge. I figured no harm leaving her there. Gotta love the determination!! But, if they are broody, the are not laying, correct? So I don't think they could be her babies.

The one that hatched today...butter yellow, no markings.

I think for the spring I may just keep this little lady in with my MIlles for breeding....I actually may just keep all my D'uccles together which includes 6 Blk&Blu mottled, 1 porc, and 4 milles. That will prob create some nice colors.....not show but for pets of course. Im focusing on my LF Sumatras and G Sebrights for purity & show qualities.

And thanks fuzzybutts, that would be 1 of my 2 blue mottled hens. The other is kinda small and has alot of white:(

I set 7 eggs from my Blue Mottled and Mille Fleur hens. I'm going to be moving my girls and guys around here in a few weeks, after all the eggs I promised go out. I'm going to put the Blue Mille Fleur cockerel over 1 Blue Mottled and 1 Mille Fleur hens. Black Mottled rooster over 2 Black Mottled pullets. Mille Fleur cockerel with a Mille Fleur hen. I have just enough cottages to do this change, now the problem will be with winter and there not being enough bird heat in a few of them, I may have to then throw all together and hope the boys behave with each other. Some of the girls won't lay until probably, Jan. But this will give me a start on a winter hobby of hatching eggs, with the 3 girls that will be laying with different rooster, surprise hatch. So what do you all think?

Does anyone know where I could get any black d'uccles ? I have been searching the internet for weeks and can't find anyone who raises them. I've even looked at every hatchery I can find and have found nothing. I know they exist ! Anyone ?

So i need those that have other birds as well as d'uccle's to chime in. What do your d'uccle roos sound like in comparison to your other roosters?
We had a silkie rooster and he was LOUD for his size. And he alarmed every time someone ran on the road by our house or the neighbor kids were out. So we have had a new d'uccle rooster for about a month and he is pretty shy still, but comes out and walks around with the other birds and then goes back to his safe spot. He is about 5-6 months old.
I think he is still trying to figure out how to "do the deed" with his ladies. He grabs their neck but doesnt "hop on". Doesnt go near the full sized girls like my little silkie boy did, but that may still come. Well.. have not hear a crow from him yet, but this morning I heard something... was more like a fairly quiet little croak.
How loud are your d'uccle roos? Do they have a crazy crow or just mine?

I call my roos crows the "Squeak toy". It sounds like something my dog would play with. Boy, do they put the effort into it though!
