D'uccle Thread

Sometimes I think gentleness is a vicious circle, the ones who are naturally gentle from the beginning get more petting/handling, so they get more and more gentle, while the freakys get wilder.
So far the ones who are wild have stayed pretty wild and the gentles got gentler.
She is a pretty bird...give her some time before you decide.
TIME is what it takes, time spent with you.

OOOPS forgot to say that if she is indeed mean to others, and should decide to pick on the Silkie, PLEASE do not allow that to happen.
A Silkie, usually has a natural hole in it's head, I know that sounds crazy, but it is true and if it has a vaulted skull it is VERY dangerous to bump or peck on the head.
The skull is open at the top.
Don't allow bulling.

He looks to be the right size, but if I were looking at him as a breeding rooster, he is too young to have so many white spangles as big as they are... they get whiter as they get older... the spngles shoudl be on EACH feather and even. just a white V at the tip... including his tail feathers.
when you look at him he should look "even" with out any white clumps
hold his wings out, his feathers should be evenly black on one side of the feather and brown on the other.... again with a white tip.. when looking at them from the back you shoudl see the tip of each feather lines up evenly with each other ... like white stair steps...

I cant tell in the picture... but MAKE sure he has LOTS of fethers on his middle toe.... thats something that once you loose in the breeding its hard to get back we have found... if they dont have good toe fethering.... we dont breed them....

breed him to hens with LOTS of beard... he looks kind of slim on the beard, good but... if bred to hens with not much, dont think he coudl fill it in for them :)

good luck... Millies are great fun !!

Was this regarding my male that was posted a few pages back asking for opinions? It's very helpful - thank you! - but I want to make sure I'm pairing the evaluation with the right pictures.

Yes.... he is a very nice roo... and its hard to tell until they get at least a year old !!
and.... its ONLY my "opinion"...so dont take anything to heart.... <G>

I was confused which roo was being spoken of also.
My comment about breeding was just at random, not about any certain birds or to any certain people.
Just my opinion in general.

I replied on a post about a Millie duccle a page or so ago, I hit "reply" an quote.. So not sure why the original post asking for "opinions" didn't come through ... I can delete it and try again... Lol

my son raises Duccles ... we just love their personality.... and he seems to do pretty well showing them usualy !!
here is just a couple of them.. one is an older rooster... and the pair is a younger pair...
I'll have to disagree. That top rooster is about as close to perfection as you can get.

edited to say- I THOUGHT THIS ROO WAS GETTING THE CRITIQUE. SORRY! GET A CLOSE-UP OF THIS ROO. OFTEN TIMES, PEOPLE ASK FOR SHOW QUALITY BIRDS AND HE IS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF WHAT ALL BREEDERS OF D'UCCLES SHOULD STRIVE FOR!

We would hope for something this quality to work with!
