D'uccle Thread

My MF was the only hen out of all of mine who *wasn't* broody this summer! I had 4 hens sharing one nest for over a month before I even gave them any eggs to sit on... crazy girls.

I honestly did not realize the ability of the d 'Uccle to brood their own eggs. I thought it was a fairly rare trait... I suppose it depends on the bloodlines.

Interesting!!

My 3 millie girls in with TN co-parented a batch of 18 chicks this past spring. It was adorable. They'd take turns on 2 nest boxes, and then took turns tending babies & eggs as they hatched, then raised the chicks after the eggs were all gone. Tennessee was in with them and was horrified by the cute little bitty chicks! It was hysterical. He knew 3 hens would kick his tail feathers if he hurt them, but they kept running up and looking at him. Big tough Tennessee was backing up and falling all over himself to get away. And with those long foot feathers on the sides, and big spurs on the middle of his feet, he could've mowed them down by accident but he never ever did.

D'Uccles make good moms, for sure.

Im hopfully getting two Duccle/silkie Pullets to hatch my chicks... let's do the math, two pullets hatching eggs AND an LG inside...oh crap, my parents are in trouble! haha

If anyone is going to the Ohio Nationals and looking for mille fleur d'Uccles let me know. I have to thin the flock a bit more before winter hits.

I will have adult birds, and a pair or two of younger birds.

I will probably post them, with pictures, in the buy/sell/trade section this weekend.

Guess who was counting birds last night?

None of my 3 went broody this past summer. Great news today, 2 dozen eggaroos in the bator! yahooo. 8 of them are Porcelain the rest are MF's. Hope all works out well with the hatch, then I bet I'll be in business!

I am new to d'Uccles and I was wondering how they fare in the winter? I live in MA and we inherited 2 sweet lavender d'Uccles. They were not in the best shape when we got them, but they seemed to perk up when we gave them some TLC. Sadly, our little girl died the first cold night we had. She was our 'special needs' chicken and we alwasy knew she wasn't quite right and probably wouldn't be with us for long. She wasn't sick, just very small and probably shouldn't have lived to begin with. Her brother is a small roo, and though he keeps up with the flock, I do worry about him. My daughter has him wrapped up in a blanket and is snuggling him right now as he is 'shivering' ...its in the 40's this morning.

Should I be worried about him? The rest of my chickens are cochins and silkies, all of which made it through last winter just fine despite all the snow and cold.
