D'uccle Thread

Doug, what a super set up. We have a B.Cochin coop like yours except it doesn't move. The windows in ours seems to be fine for our birds, and like I've been told by many older chicken people, its not so much the cold as it is the air moving through the feathers is what depletes them of warmth. If that is not so with D's, PLEASE correct me!!!!

So, I have made a decision! I am switching my breeding focus over to only Porc D'uccles, for two reasons, 1, i LOVE the color and 2, the lack of quality Porc birds. My plan is to hatch out quality MFs and Porc (if i can find any) and make trios and pairs with either a MF roo over Porc hens or a Por roo over MF hens. Keep all the typy birds and breed them back to Porc's to which should get me about 50/50 Porc chicks, keep those and then re-asses. Do to the lack of Porc im going to be working with Ideal and Mt, Healty chicks. My hope is that breeding Quality MFs to Porc's i will get some better type and cull the ones with bad type. Am i making sense?

The two d'Uccles I am for-sure selling already have a person interested in buying them - a MF cockerel and a BM/MF pullet. The others I have considered selling are a Black Mottled hen, a Black Mottled/Mille Fleur cockerel, and some Self-Blues.
I don't think I am transporting any birds back (unless I find something I really can't live without, and buy it for myself

). I am taking several birds that I have pre-sold to BYCers, though

I know both those Silkie ladies! They are very nice, and so are their Silkies!

What do you mean by 'black mottled/mille fleur'? If it's a cross between the two, it should be just black mottled, as that's what all the chicks from my cross like that hatch out as (as they should according to the Chicken Calculator). Or do you mean it's a very dark mille fleur, ones I've heard referred to as 'black mille fleur'?

Nice coop set-ups!

Can you post a pic of your pipe feeders?
I think I know what you've done, but I want to be sure. I'm not happy with my feeders and need to modify them.

You can use a large piece of PVC pipe (think 3" diameter or so) and put an elbow on the bottom end. Hang it in the run/coop and fill it from the top, it works as a gravity feeder

Their father was a Mille Fleur and their mother was a Black Mottled. They look most like the Black Mottled, but with about 1/3 of the mottling.

The problem of just an elbow is the feed flows out on the floor unless you put anouther length of pipe with holes for them to eat out of, and if you use a 90 degree you have to watch as they will possible Jam (had that happen to me until I went to the Y), with the Y it does not, as the feed is not going anywhere other than straight down. It is still a gravity feeder.

All pipes are dry fitted together. With the clean out on the bottom you can unscrew it if you realy must but in 2 years of using them, I have only done that when I give them a good yearly antiseptic cleaning.

I'd love to see pics of the mott pair your placing. How fare are you from Joplin MO or Tulsa?? I'm 100mls East of Tulsa, so was curious
