D'uccle Thread

Thanks!

Do you have your babies on Chick Start? You might give them a little manna pro gamebird start on the side. I think d'Uccles need more protein than average to help 'finance' all those foot feathers and hocks. I always supplement a tad. Not too much, so that other issues aren't caused, but a little more than non-featherfoot birds need.

They're eating Purina Med chick starter and living with the Serama chicks hatched the same week. Very cute in there with the tiny ones. I think they are happy to have a few more friends. How much exactly is a tad? I will see what I can do...maybe egg yolk?

Serama are adorable as chicks!!

Add some d'Uccles and it would too much cuteness....

Sorry about the 'tad'. About a thimble-full per bird every 2-3 days, usually after they're a week old and the feathers have started coming in good.
There's a little measuring cup in the manna pro that I use. I like the mp because it has so much other beneficial stuff in it.

When I was a kid we used to scramble eggs for the chicks and add some dirt to it.

That was back in the Dark Ages, and was what my Grandpa taught Mom to do when she was a kid and the chicks needed a little boost. Talk about giving some extra minerals LOL.

Sheesh, I'm rambling. Time to go to bed!!

I wouldn't give them too much yolk too often.

My d'Uccles are power layers. They lay everyday. Of course they aren't right now because of the cold, but I know when the weather warms up, they will be.

Oh, and we have decided to sell our Black Mottled trio. They are very nice. We have a cockeral, pullet, and hen. We have decided to concentrate on just the MF and GN and the Lemons when we get some of them.

During the summer our D's lay consistently 1 egg every 1-2 days. The only reason the are not laying in the winter is we don't provide sup lite. When we did provide sup lite we still had an egg every day or two.

Mine are also power layers in the spring and summer, but taper off in August for molt time. It is true about the light thing, my mille pullet that I've had in the garage until yesterday has laid an egg daily for the last 4 days. She is a new egglayer.

On a side note, I had one of my young cockerels nip me today. That's the 2nd time he's done it, so since his only desireable trait was being a cute pet, he has a visit with the grim reaper today.

I wish mine were like that, my one black mottled hen lays about 2 eggs a week in her 'heavy' season...the porcelains have been here for 5 months and haven't laid one egg.

Mine could be power layers and I don't know it because they go BROODY at the drop of an egg

I am determined that I will do all the hatching this year. We'll see how that goes.

The project gals are laying, the silkies are now all laying, but the millies all just look at me and

They are always the very last to start laying and the very first to stop laying whenever the weather chages.

Well, if these don't sell on featherauction they've got til the end of next month before the 'big' local auction...so they'd better get to paying their way if they want to stay...

I've "search"ed for next box size for D'uccles and can't find anything. I only have two pullets right now but setting up their new pen. What size nest boxes, door opening and roosts should I make for them?
