They are beautiful little birds.
And when you read their history, they were purely bred for show. I think that made a difference in temperment and intelligence. They are smart, and awesome fliers and foragers when allowed to free-range. Also social enough to come and jump in your lap and 'talk' to you.
I've had some hens fly up on my shoulder to scold me when I was petting a silkie.
I've also had them come push the cats out of my lap to comfort me when I'd had a really bad day.
They have a unique voice that is different than other bantam chickens.
When they lallop across the yard on those big feathery feet they never fail to make me smile.
A SQ d'Uccle is gorgeous and they come in beautiful colors and patterns.
Oh my gosh, I too have been scolded by my favorite porcelain d'uccle hen who is now broody! Now I know it was because she was hormonal. She would squawk at me till I picked her up, then if I pet another chicken she would stand at my feet and growl! Jealous little girl! I love how the roosters do their little dance almost looking like a ruffled grouse before loving the ladies, and how they are generally easy going. There's always exeptions of course. I also love watching them run-- like running with snowshoes-- across the yard. They are shameless treat hounds as well! And they make such good mothers! I even like how my broodies, aside from their dedication to hatching eggs turn into mama tiger to protect their chicks, and how sometimes they even let me hold & pet their chicks. And they talk to me too, I swear! They happily and sometimes unexpectedly will fly up on my shoulder (hens) to get petted, and I have one rooster that would always hop on the edge of the trashcan I used to store the treats in whenever I had the lid off. You must wear caution and not wear your Sunday best around these little chickens who like to visit you.
