D'uccle Thread

My eight chicks from Teddi are doing very well. Now that they are feathering, I can say there are three porcelain and five Mille fleurs. I love their foot feathering, so incredibly cute! Teddi, the paper toweling worked great, thanks! No more problems so far with feathering breaking off. They are getting along really well even with the LF mixed chick I have in there with them. They look so tiny next to her!

Any idea at what age I should start being able to tell girls from boys?

When is the crossroads? And will you have any birds available while you are there?
Thanks!

Crossroads is the last weekend in October. I don't plan to take sale birds unless they're pre-sold and can be picked up no later than Friday (I'll arrive Thursday evening). I'm not sure yet who will be available. I haven't even entered yet, and have until 10/3 to do so.

I'm still hatching millies and silkies and showgirls. I have 2 bator hens that just want to sit on eggs, except for brief breaks for food & water. I will let them hatch until their over it, or until they finally decide to take care of their chicks. So far they seem to like eggs only, and kick the pesky noise-makers out when they get needy.... Luckily I have 2 large brooders!

Here's some of my recent young uns...

d'Uccles, of which I have twice as many 'newborns' and about as many 7-10 day olds:

Wish I was up there and not down here in FL so I could make it to the Crossroads meet, that would be an experience to remember, for sure. I still have lots of extra mille fleur babies, have been selling them out cheap, only a handful of peoople locally that are interested...had someone drive an hour, bought 4 pullets last weekend. Hoping for more buyers today and tomorrow. Right now some of my young ones are going through avian pox so they aren't looking their best.

Wish you could make it to Crossroads as well, since there's a d'Uccle club meeting during the show!!! I'm hoping to meet and talk to some experts....

This isn't a good year for sales in general. I normally do well with sales at the local fair, but its so cold this year the birds are all huddled up and looking miserable. Guess I will bring some home and sell at the November show, or pre-sell for IN. I really wanted to sell my white trio NOW

I love the cockeral and one pullet, but the other pullet is a lunatic and the color is a pain to keep clean.

Mine from february out of the same parents are JUST starting to lay!!! Most of my porcelains start at 6 months. My milles start earlier by a tiny bit though.

Ok I will try to be patient. I want some winky eggs though! They are going to be so cute.

Sales are slow for bantams here in Missouri too. I just wrote my check to mail for our Missouri Poutry Association Fall show on October 22. I am going to take 1 mille and 1 porcelain pullet, and 3 porcelain cockerels and 4 mille cockerels (with porcelain heritage) There was only 2 other d'uccles shown this spring by someone else (Mopargal72), and that was out of eggs from my own flock. Ironic, eh? So I'm not going to worry too much about the status of their foot feathers from running around in the Missouri Clay. I am hoping there will be more d'uccles this fall. My mille hens are not really up to being shown as they originated out of hatchery stock, and I only have 1 generation away from hatchery with the Milles. The boys look pretty good actually, except for skimpy on on the black that is supposed to go with their white speckles. I think one is going to definitely be my Mille breeding choice for next year to offset the too much white of the hatchery hens. I am also picking which porcelains to breed for next year. One of the two roosters I'm using this year (Bo Diddly) isn't putting out very fluffy beards in his offspring, though their combs are better than the ones Sugardaddy has put out. So I'm having to decide if beard or comb is more important to go for. Any advice from you seasoned breeders? I'm hoping the show results will help me decide which ones score better and might have better offspring as they are on even keel with me. In another week or two I'll post some pics and you all can help me decide. (All in all personality is still the #1 trait for me over looks)
