D'uccle Thread

Nathan, your birds are very pretty! Your hen has absolutely gorgeous foot feathering! Love the cute pose of your pullet in the last picture. She looks happy to have her pic taken!

Thanks, that pullet was definitely not posing she was the hardest one to snap...mine aren't "cuddly" like everyone else's but maybe b/c I have mine on free range most of the time. I'm sure if I had them penned at eye level they would calm down but if they think I'm after them, forget it.

What a pretty pullet! I know how it is spending time with those d'uccles, but be careful your husband doesn't get jealous! I told him my d'uccles actually like it when I talk gushy to them and pet their beards. LOL That's what really sold me on the breed was their personalities before anything else.

NathHowe, I really like the body type on your two, no skinny necks there! Yours actually have all the black divider between the base and the white spangle, where my millies seem to miss that black divider and just go straight to white spangle from the base color.

LOL
We've been married more than 31 years. DH is happy if I talk to someone or anything else besides him!

When I open my mouth he figures it means he will have to do something on the farm and he is at the age where he wants to eat, sleep and scratch his tummy. That is about all.

If you breed in black Mottled to your MF you will get the black chevron that is required. It takes 2-3 generations but you can get it in there. That is how we are doing it in the MF bantam Cochins and I am getting some nice chevrons between the gold base and white tip. Of course, I started from scratch to make the MF color in bantam Cochins since I would not add in another breed to Cochins so it has been a long haul but in two years I went from regular colors to the MF pattern. Still have to perfect it for showing but in another 2 years I hope to see a huge difference.
Just a heads up.

This is what I am getting in my Cochins now.

This is a little lady from you. The one in front. She has pretty nice markings at just 5 months old.

Thanks Teddi...I know my fault lies in the rooster's comb...its one thing that is holding me back from showing him. He is stunning when you see him in person, every feather on his body has a spangle, and I know if I caged him for a couple months his feet feathers would be huge. The fair is in January. You think he has potential despite his funky comb? I have 3 cockerels I need to pick from for a new young roo to the flock...they all have their good and bad. I hate being a perfectionist!

Spoke to the people at the Feed Store today and told them about my mille fleurs. The lady was like, "oh everyone is wanting those right now are you on Chicken Chat?" I assume that is here. I cannot find a buyer for $10 d'uccles. The market is very small

Show them both anyway! He's gorgeous everywhere else and the comb is not that many points in total score. In doing so you may create more local interest in your birds and find buyers for your extras. Mine seen't perfect either, but we still need to promote this breed and get more people interested in breeding them.

I agree show them anyways. as Teddi said the come is only a small part of the overall score. THey may just not be as bad as you make them out to be in your own mind.
Don't rule them out on what you think unless it is something that is woth lots of points. Let the judges look at them and decide where they place. afterwards you may be able to get hints of what the judge liked or disliked about each bird.
