D'uccle Thread

It's very rare, for me. Only one in 6 years, and that was this past summer. I thought it was another pen, and when I realized it was coming from the unheated brooder I was stunned. Little goofball was incredibly pleased with himself, too! I don't think he was even 6 weeks old yet, either....

Thank goodness mine from the same hatch as Moonchild's haven't discovered that yet!
I have 5 roos and only 2 pullets in the house. I don't want to hear crowing.

I am thinking our little hatchling is a pullet! What do y'all think?

BTW, this little mille fleur is the product of a mating between two 100% (?) pure porcelain d'uccles and supposedly would only throw of porcelain babies. I don't know much about chicken genetics, but it looks to me like this could be what's called a "split", no? This was the only baby that hatched. I had 4 eggs when Charlie (my roo) died, and my American game went broody that week so we stuck them under her. There is no chance whatsoever that any roo other than Charlie mated with my porcelain d'uccle hen.

BTW, she/he hatched October 18th. She is cushed down in my hubby's hand because she's scared. She was hatched/raised by a broody & has only been handled a couple of times in her life.

hmmm...hard to say, usually by that age the boys have a bigger comb, but my girls never "color up" till way later...I honestly want to say boy.

That chick also doesn't look 'black' to me, are the wing feathers bluish as opposed to black? if so then it may be a blue Mille Fleur. However I don't know, I'm with you only basic knowledge on chicken genetics and I haven't delved to far into D'uccles genetics and color combos.

Thanks. He/she just turned 7 weeks old. When his father was that age, he had a really BIG comb and obvious roo saddle & tail feathers. He's really pretty. Might be a blue mille fleur, as there is blue in the porcelain. I am hoping for a girl, but I will be happy with what I get. If it's a boy, I'll re-breed him back to his biological mother (even though he thinks Olga, the broody gamehen who hatched him, is his mother).

Whatever he is, he's a BIG baby. He cries and peeps if he can't see Olga & she is trying to make him more independent, but he wants no part of that "on his own" business! Little whiner.

As he/she gets older, I'll get better pictures & we will have a better idea of what it is as it grows. Pretty little bugger, though.

i'm pretty sure my 2 are hens which are pic. above urs. notice mine is getting color in to. my mille there has porcelain heratigae as well.

i also noticed that it doesnt seem like she has a beard in those pics nor hardly any feathers on the legs...is there any way you can get a shot of her standing up that would really help

Her legs are very feathered, but she doesn't seem to be showing any signs of beard yet. I was concerned about her mother having a late beard, too. I think Portia (the biological mother) was about 14-15 weeks before she really showed a beard. I'll see if I can get a good picture of her. She's really pretty, too.

I was also mistaken about her hatch date. We looked in DH's "Chicken Journal" (you have NO idea the meticulous records this man keeps about these birds!), and she was hatched October 14th, which would make her more like 8 weeks. I think at 8 weeks, if she was a male, there would be a lot more comb. At least, his father was that way. Had a big comb and obvious hackle feathers at 8-9 weeks. Was crowing at 12 weeks. Grew up to be a beautiful boy and died a couple of weeks after he was accidentally injured by another bird in the yard (we had a 12-pound Delawegger that got the zoomies one day and just went zooming across the yard, and poor little Charlie crossed his path and was run over... didn't do well for a while, then got better, then went downhill and died). Portia stopped laying 2 days after Charlie died. That's why I tried to hatch out the last handful of their eggs. He has been gone since late September, and she still hasn't laid.

To me, he/she looks like a she, and she looks like a booted bantam. My Millie fleur pullets are only 7 weeks and they have huge beards and cheek tufts.
Just my opinion

Good luck with her, she sure is gorgeous!
