d'uccle with a "bum" leg (update getting worse - Video too)

well Pinsprings.. I hope she continues to improve.

Mine walked around some yesterday out of her cage.
well, ran and flew. She was jumpy (not as much of a pet as some of my flock)
But I thought that had to be good that she could move so fast.

She still prefers to lay and mine hardly drinks either. I scramble her some egg and add water to it.
Her crop empties every night and her poo was watery last night, so I assume she is getting enough fluids... at least I hope.

How's your chicks? Our girl is doing fairly well. Still in the house in the cat crate though.
She has a name now... Red Dahlia. But we say it Redahlia.

your little ladies are adorable and I'm so glad they're still getting better...

Sadly my little girl just wasn't getting better .... and I choose to end her suffering.

She tried and tried to get up but would exhaust herself to the point of gasping harder than I've ever seen any chicken gasp before... she did ok when sleeping or very calm but even if she tried to eat (which she still wanted to do) her body would just go into a convulsion - her legs would kick and her wings would flap and she'd stretch her neck as far out as she could. x( ... this morning her comb was very very pale and I knew she couldn't be getting enough oxygen, water or even food in that state and she was just suffering.

None of the other seem to have any problems - but I thought about getting a necropsy done just to know what it was.

I hope your girls keep getting better !

my little girl will be greatly missed

she was such a trooper!

ETA:
does anyone know where I could get a necropsy done in NH (and would carbon monoxide poisoning ruin the potential for any results?)

She sounds way worse than mine got. The rooster that I have that acts like his
leg hurts, is holding his own pretty good outside.

here was our little sweetie tonight.. we have been letting her out of the crate more and more...
she is turning into a lap chicken.. by her choice. She sat in my mother in law's lap every time we let her out.
Once she had to JUMP up to get to her, then she climbed up her leg to get into her lap . It just melted my mother in law's heart!

I think I may have waited to long to bring her inside. I should've brought her in at the first signs of limping but I waited until she stopped moving ... although I do feel like there had to have been another underlying problem - she hung in there for 7 days, far more than anyone else thought she was going to make it.

You're little girl is just adorable and so outgoing!

... good luck trying to get her to live back in the coop again. haha

Kimb, sorry that you lost the battle, I may too. My girl is holding her own but still cannot walk. She took a turn for the worse with her right leg stretched out behind her. She could not even keep her body in an upright position and lost all mobility, she just flopped and stuggled.

I finally taped her legs together with enough length between them that she could hobble around and she is learning to take small steps. She still has to balance herself with her wings. She will only eat black oil sunflower seeds, won't eat egg yolks anymore or anything else. I am going to try some soft dog food tomorrow. She was drinking on her own but today she hardly drank anything, so I am going to have to go back to the syringe.

I did notice this evening that her toes are not curled anymore, that's at least one good sign. I don't even bother to put her in her crate anymore. I put her in a dark box at night but leave her in the floor on a towel during the day, she stays on or near the towel.

Kimb sorry for the loss, glad everyone else is doing better. Just a word of warning since I am now getting my fill of sick chickens. Several months ago my rooster had these same symptoms. After about a month of treatment he recovered and I was so excited. Last week, his sibling became ill and I began treating her w/ the same method, four days ago my roo fell ill again same symptoms and now they are both crated and being cared for while I hope for the best. My advise to me if I could do it over again would be to continue some if not all of the treatment for the effected birds (I was using st johns and mega vita b). If its neurological it seems to reappear. Just my two cents. I would hate anyone to have witnessed the happiness of recovery like me, just to see it all taken away.

CDennis... I'm sorry ... I hate getting hopes up! ... I am leaning towards my girl having had mareks or encephalitis.

Everyone else is still getting vitamins/electrolyte water ... or vitamin/probios water ... or nutri-drench poultry water ... with occasional Vitamin B ... I switch it up and throw in plain water every few days also to make sure they are getting enough fluids in this cold weather...

The 10 chicks were all vaccinated, I have 3 that I don't know if they have been vaccinated and then my 1 older hen I believe was vaccinated as I did get her through Blue Seal Feed Store (so hatchery) I just don't know which one and that was 2-3 years ago.

.....

However my last 2 d'uccles have gotten very vocal recently. ? . . It's been 2 weeks since I took the little girl out of the coop and they didn't seem worried then... could it be they are just now wondering where she went? ... or are they naturally little vocal birds? (These are my first d'uccles). They chirp & peep much louder and more often than the rest.

Good luck everyone else.

(I finally got the number to be able to try and do a necropsy) but I'm afraid it'll be too long since she was culled to make a determination. It is part of UNH so I wasn't going to call until monday. (Which would be 7 days since she was alive).
