Duck Addiction

I have found it brings out the best in me. You're right, chores don't often feel like chores. When I feel a little lazy, I just look at my runners and buffs and suddenly it isn't work, it's blessing the flock, of which I feel a part.

Sometimes I figure if anyone other than duck people read some of the things I write, they are convinced I am beyond help!!!

I think it's normal to be excited about a new pet and want more at first. I really haven't, we actually have been very slow at adding anything... I did let some of my girls try some nests, so far though it's only produced one baby.. a delightful little thing.. which i am crossing every body part is a girl!

I am adding some mallards this week, i'm a little nervous but i think it'll be ok, my mum has always loved the breed and since i already have several ducks i figure two more won't raise the roof... it's just like the chickens i am adding next month

My husband wants those and i'd like some chicken eggs, honestly but after raising our own ducks eggs seems silly to go back to store bought.

So i guess what i mean is while i am making additions it's been a slower process, i've had the first group over a year now, it's taken me time to get into routine and get through a winter to decide if/when i add more.

As much as I love ducks and hope mine have some, I have to agree with some of these statements.
I don't think I could even afford having more ducks! It would come down to buying food for them or for my family, which at times, neither choice is an option.
So, yes, I have to sadly admit that I don't think I'll be having any add-ons.... as much as I would love to hold and cuddle a duckling again or hear the sound of sweet little peeps first thing in the morning, it's just not a realistic idea right now </3.

Ya know, as well as being completely smitten the moment I heard the first peeps, I realized that there is a point - different for each one of us - beyond which we cannot give back as much love as we are getting. That helps me manage my desire for more ducks.

I totally agree with this statement above.

For me these numbers below are my max in direct correlation to their housing size:

Large ducks: Four. I've had more and I've had less but this number is the best for me.

Bantam ducks: I have one pair and their daughter. I think I could probably add another two females but then I'd have to re-home the males so that addition is on hold for now.

Geese: My pilgrim pair are only 5 weeks old but I suspect due to space that is as many as I will keep with the possibility of an additional female sometime in the future (their daughter of course).

Bantam chickens: Total is currently 14 including a rooster. That's the absolute max.

Large chickens: Total is currently 13. It's doable but I think I will lower my max to 10 over time so the 8'x8' coop cleaning isn't as big of a hassle as it is right now.
(less chickens = less poop!)

I'm addicted, ever since last year when we got our Pete, a pekin. Sadly we raised him as an only duck which caused lots of problems and he was rehomed to a friend because he couldn't get along with anybody.

We now have 4 pekins, 1 welsh harlequin, 2 runners, 3 muscovies (one sitting on a nest of 15 due to hatch the end of june), and 2 buff geese :) I would love to add a couple more girls to my little flock but I think the bf is all out of go go juice with the answer yes lmao I think I broke it and now all I get is "no, no, no, no"

Aw, I'm super bummed to hear about Pete... If only I were closer... Give the bf a roll of duck tape and tell him to fix the yes button.

! I was sad to have to make the decision but he is in a great home, and he is spoiled rotten and with people, which he prefers lol....he sits on his "bed" and watched tv with his new momma

At first I was only going to get 4 ducks. I ended up ordering 10 and got 2 for free. Now I have 12 almost 4 week olds and still want more. Good thing hubby likes them too!!! I didn't realize how great ducks were until I got them!!
