Love my ducks. All but one are Cayugas, and that one is a call drake. (He had a mate but she went missing, so he's a widower. Although I think I'd love to get another call duck for a new wife for him, so he won't be so lonely, I'm afraid the Cayuga drakes would smash a bantam duck... they used to try to get to Elvis's bride - Priscilla, of course - when she was here, and he spent a lot of time protecting her. Luckily, the calls can fly, but the Cayugas don't.... ) I had to buy some sexed Cayuga ducklings to even out the drake/duck ratio. Then two weeks later, one Cayuga hatched two ducklings... and another is broody on a nest, now.
My goose Kate adopted the 3 purchased and 2 hatched ducklings. She is JUST a year old this month and is the most wonderful surrogate mother for those ducklings.
Anyway, ducks just make me smile. Ever notice how ducks are always smiling? They're the happiest creatures. Even Elvis smiles and when he takes a solo swim in the stock tank, he exhibits such joy!
I love to hear them gabbling quietly as they walk together or spend some joint effort on some ducky task.
