Huh... I wonder why that is? šŸ¤”
It's really neat and I've heard a lot about it so I'm curious as well. I wonder if it's got anything to do with the melanin? As they age their bodies don't produce as much. Would some of the melanin be used in the hens bloom since they lay black eggs? Seems like I've read this before but that certainly doesn't make it true

I was just looking through my pictures trying to find a quick fix for this duckling fever that was brought on by seeing the absolutely gorgeous ducklings that the duckling addict enabler @FunnyfarmMidwest shared with us and this picture made me smile. This is Maggie at a few days old. I've heard people say that ducks are always smiling. I think it looks like Maggie has a little smile here šŸ˜ She is such a sweetheart ā¤ļø She's the only one of my ducks that doesn't hate to be held. Well actually she does hate to be held, but she doesn't mind if I snuggle her a little bit while she stands in my palm. They grow up so fast! She's almost 8 months old now

The more I look at this picture, I think it's her squinty looking eye that's making it seem like she's smiling ☺

*** I am determined to get a picture of a really messy duckling brooder to help curb the urge to start up the incubator and collect eggs. ***

Of course I am kidding. Please keep those duck and duckling pictures coming. Seeing everyones pictures always makes for a better day šŸ’œ

@shawluvsbirds i know that you breed Cayugas. Are the hens the only ones that usually end up with some white feathers? I only have 1 drake and his feathers are all black still. I really love that white and black look that I've seen on some Cayugas šŸ˜ I wonder if this happens with Black East Indies too @FunnyfarmMidwest
That made me want to go down memory lane. We have a Google hub that is basically a digital picture frame for our ducks and other pets. I so miss having cute ducklings inside.

My black runner here from almost a year ago, always looks like she is angry. She still often has that permanent glare. She was such a character at that age. When we introduced her to the week older ducklings, she would attack them. The older ducklings didn't even notice her because she was soo tiny šŸ˜†.

I don't know what causes the black egg bloom. I tried looking it up one time and never really got an answer. I would be interested on finding more about it. I tried looking up before if only black ducks could produce black eggs, since one of my black swedes produces a black too.

They are so adorable! The tiny one standing up? šŸ˜‚ I was just saying something about how Miley (the Call hatchmate to Maggie) has mastered the resting bĀ”+ch face, it seems like your duck has too 🤣 I would love to know what they're thinking while we're, "Awe! They are so adorable mean muggin. Look at those sweethearts!". I think my ducks would have a very colorful vocabulary if they spoke English 🤣 But they're still so gorgeous!!!
