Baby chickens take forever to mature (got silkies in Feb...no eggs yet😩) but ducks are way too fast. It's horrible, they're easily three times as big as they were when I got them.View attachment 2852719
This is Judith, one of the smaller ducklings. She's not even three weeks old and she's about as big as my silkies who are seven months old.
Too cute.
Will that leg band expand with her growth, or do you replace them?

@shawluvsbirds don't you have a Call with angel wing? I'm wanting to put Maggie in a run with a kiddie pool, but I'm not sure if she'll be able to get in the pool. I wonder if it'd be better to keep those rubber bowls around for her ease. I've not ever noticed her fly. Even when they do their flapping while jumping up and down, she gets off the ground but I suspect it's more jumping that's causing that tiny bit of lift off. Will I still need to clip her wing feathers? I guess I'm most unsure if AW hinders lift or actual flight. Of course then again, I may be way off, which is always a possibility ☺️
I have one that I was able to correct but they aren't perfect. She doesn't really ever fly but I have steps in my pool.
I would say it depends on your set up if there's a chance she couldn't get out or not.

It will not expand. I took that photo right after cutting the old bands, swapping and sizing the new bands. When they're adults I may find a different band but for now these will work. I'm only banding them so that I can watch out for possible slow growth or other bad traits.

Sorry I haven’t been on guys! Things have been super hectic! I’ve got a ton of catching up to do but I thought I would share this with you guys. (Sorry not a duck this time) I just hatched a little silkie chick! :ya
Any ideas on color? View attachment 2853022View attachment 2853023
I have a quick question for any chicken people. I bought these eggs as supposed “pure silkies” but I have had people tell me that they don’t even look like silkie chicks. Someone told me they are supposed to have a crest and a rose comb. Did I get ripped off?:confused:

One of my hatchery quality silkies had a single comb too.

I had someone tell me that it looks like a Cochin. But I just don’t know anything about chickens. :hmm
Looks nothing like a BC (see my sig), and everything like a Silkie. Silkies have walnut combs, not rose. Some hatchery quality have singles.

Post pics once they're around 8 weeks.

Thanks! I’m just not educated enough to know myself. I bought these eggs on a whim. Really appreciate the info! :)
