Duck and adopted chick

I was lucky to have my polish lay at the same time my duck went broody. I rolled my eggs under her and later on took the duck eggs (they went bad) and today I had my first chick hatch!! The mama duck has no problem with him/her but will the other ducks in the flock? Seeing as it is a small chicken?

I would think that the motherly instinct of the duck will keep it safe ... i have only ever done it in reverse !!!

Just make sure mama duck doesn't try teaching her new baby how to swim. Baby chickens and water don't end well, even if covered in the oils from mama duck's feathers.

I was once told that the chickens survival instinct will stop it going swimming but dont quote me on that !!!

So cute! I just love Polish chickens!
The duck should take care of it just fine, but I would be concerned that, if you have a water trough/pond, the duck might go for a swim and the chick would naturally try to follow her and would drown.

Well I'm actually having puppies as we speak!

I have raised numerous broods of ducklings using chicken hens. I have never successfully raised chicks using a duck hen is they mother. They generally get crushed by the 'mother's' feet or chilled if the 'mother' goes swimming.

I'm sure I will...but my Ginger of course didn't cooperate and went and started having them where I can't hardly see. She didn't use her birthing box.
