Duck died suddenly... Any idea what caused it?

So you guys think she died because she started laying?
So strange. She had 1 egg every morning without fail, even to the morning she died (and she even laid the egg meant for tomorrow) so what do you think could have caused an infection if all her eggs came out?

Not to say it is it but my pekin sometimes lay 2 eggs a day (even often when she just started laying), the second one being laid in the late afternoon, soft and rubbery. Other days she lays 1 egg every day. She lays more than my runners. Point is some ducks are just overly fertile.

Honestly some are bred strictly for meat purposes and egg laying is not a concern so many have reproductive issues.

I had two Ducks within 12 hours of exposure die from Botulinum Toxin. Check water source and weather was my answer. If you put charcoal in their water it will help with toxins.
We hate when our babies die.

I think you may be right. We gave her fresh clean water the night before but she always mucks it up at night. Sounds possible she dug out the toxin from the soil?
Will ANY charcoal work, as in, no specific brands to avoid? And how much do we add?

We really don't know only a necropsy would tell. Reproduction problems are usually the main killer of laying poultry. Infections, toxins to name a few Hardware disease. I am very sorry you don't have closure with her death. Just take comfort that you were with her and she knew it. :hugs

Thanks :(
She was slowly getting worse over about 2 hours, and began to cry (tears dripping down her face) about 30 mins before she stopped breathing... Breaks my heart to have witnessed that. I can only hope it was less painful for her than it appeared to us.
