Duck hatch-a-long october/november!!!!!! come join!

It's typical of most birds during the winter. Fertility goes down. Ducks specifically molt and eggs aren't fertile when they are in molt.

My problem may have been shipping though. The eggs were all sent 2 day priority but didn't arrive for 4 days, and one batch 7 days,

Interesting. I assumed they were like my chickens, when they molt they stop laying, once they start laying again the eggs have been fertile. The laying dropped off while they were molting, I figured what they were laying would be fertile. My bad :) At least I have 9 that I know are developing, can't wait to see what hatches, they are going into lock down in about 4 days.

Yes that is a great result for shipped eggs.

I have spent $70 on eggs from 4 different locations, and I only have 4 still growing. Lol. Not so lucky. But I have calls and Anconas, both are typically more expensive breeds. So it's just luck of the draw.

I'm waiting now and just bulk ordering ducklings in the spring.

Oh what a bummer! I suppose it's better to have 4 than none. Especially two great breeds like those. Do you usually sell your ducklings?

Call ducks I will be selling as soon as they start laying and they hatch (so probably around feb/march).

The Anconas I've had bad luck with. I will be ordering ducklings from four-six different preservation farms this spring between jan-march in order to build my own flock. Once they are old enough to breed (around 5-6 months) I will start selling them as well.

Just had a tragedy here my rescue cattle dog broke his tie out (he's on it when we aren't home cause he'll dig out when we are gone. Anyway, he broke the tie out and got in the duck pen (thankfully he got in just moments before we drove in) and got after the ducks. I hadn't separated breeds yet so everyone was loose together. And which duck does he injure? My show quality Cayuga drake(my only Cayuga drake too) and my young Welsh harlequin duck.... who just died.... the drake! I'm gonna collect eggs from the girls he was, housed with at night and hope at least some of them are pure Cayuga!

I have been so busy with my new babies I haven't been on BYC for awhile. I had a bit of a tragedy while on vacation. My neighbor who was looking after the animals called to let me know one of my ducklings passed away. I'm not sure what happened. I'm still out of town until Wednesday. I'll be starting a batch of quail next. About 40 eggs.

Awe im sorry about your duckling. It sucks when you're not home and something happens. You'll like incubating the quail, much faster, and MUCH easier. They just pop out! Ha.
