Duck hatch-a-long october/november!!!!!! come join!

Awe im sorry about your duckling. It sucks when you're not home and something happens. You'll like incubating the quail, much faster, and MUCH easier. They just pop out! Ha.

I'm so sad about my duckling. She definitely seemed to be the weakest of the group since hatch day. She is the yellow duckling in my avatar. I can't wait to start my quail next week. After that I was to try laced Wyandottes. That will be my first hatch with chickens and all the hens we will keep for eggs. They are such beautiful birds. So excited for my hatch ventures I have planned.

I have been so busy with my new babies I haven't been on BYC for awhile. I had a bit of a tragedy while on vacation. My neighbor who was looking after the animals called to let me know one of my ducklings passed away. I'm not sure what happened. I'm still out of town until Wednesday. I'll be starting a batch of quail next. About 40 eggs.
Sorry about your baby... Excited to get you some quail eggs. Mine are two weeks old today and sooo much fun!

We are very excited! I just hope I can hatch them without getting too attached. With my husband laid off and grocery prices the way they are this is a great inexpensive way to feed my family. We want to start a huge garden and also get a milk goat.

Yeah coturnix and bob whites are great meat birds, they reach maturity and can be processed in a lot shorter time than chickens too.

The call ducks aren't meat ducks, but the Anconas are. Once I get my flock established we will probably process them.

I sold off all my coturnix and got some bob whites, they are only about 2 months old now so when I get back from vacation I should be able to separate out the excess males.

I have never tried duck before. I hear it's really strong. I can't wait to start processing our own meat. I would eventually like to do our own larger animals too. I see my family being very self sufficient someday. At least that's the plan.

With the preen oil gland removed and then properly roasted, duck is DELICIOUS. I wouldn't describe it as strong at all. But it is very, very rich.

I'm very excited to find out (although I refuse to do the killing).
I can't do the ducks either.

I can do chickens, but it is hard. No way I can do the ducks. My husband will have to do the deed and I do the rest.
