Awww. I'm so sorry.

I don't know about reasons for them to quit, I'm only on my second hatch and still trying to learn as much as I can. Did it pip internally? They are supposed to pip before they finish up their yolk sac and then they learn to breath while it is absorbed.

It didn't look like it pipped internally, I took the end of the egg with the air sack off first and saw no sign of a pip. The duckling was in position though, head under wing and all that. Is it possible it tried to do an internal pip in the wrong spot? I did loose one chick that externally pipped but not in the air sack and it drowned.

Yup that is one possible thing that could have happened. Sometimes they just aren't strong enough to make it. Some drown (as in humidity was too high early on) but I've never had that happen so Im a little doubtful of that, I've heard of ducklings strangling themselves...there's just so many reasons. It's a LOT more common in shipped eggs. For example, in both groups of 60 quail eggs I had shipped, I had around 10 from each that were fully absorbed, fully developed, but dead. Really upsetting but it just happens.

I've had it happen with one duckling, and that was worse.

Right now I have two call ducks hatching, had one that died off, one that's developing normally, and one that needs help. It's so stressful, I'm hoping this one I'm helping survives. It's such a tedious process. Ill be up every 2 hours tonight helping him out,

I set 21 duck eggs from my ducks, had 100% fertility, I didn't see movement in all of them when I went into lockdown but quite a few were moving and I was doing fast candles, didn't want to mess with them to much. So far 1 has hatched, 1 is almost done hatching, and 2 more are pipped. With those crappy percentages something probably happened.

I know that earlier on my electricity went out multiple times a day, for a couple of days in a row (electric company was working on the system and failed to mention it ahead of time

) so maybe that had something to do with it? Although I also set a bunch of eggs from my layer flock, and those are steadily hatching, have to check but I think over 50% have hatched so far.

I do have some shipped eggs in the bator also, Rhodebar. I don't know if I'll ever do shipped eggs again, I bought 12, they were packed so some were near the edge of the box and one was smashed on arrival. 4 more never started and I saw no bulls eye when I broke them open (yolks were intact), 2 of the remaining fertile ones I'm pretty sure were pullet eggs. 1 has hatched so far, and when I candled tonight I saw no movement from the other 6. I think I have a $40 Rhodebar Rooster

Yeah temp fluctuations would definitely do it, although I have heard mainly that it delays hatching more so than actually kills the embryo. So you may still have some hatch.

Haha on the $40 rooster I feel your pain, I have had that happen twice to me now. I'm now laying extra and having live ducklings shipped to me. Ill still order some eggs here and there but nothing major, going to do swaps on here too, that way I'm not throwing away money.

Maybe the electrical outages affected them by making them weaker but not killing them outright? That might explain why your own eggs are hatching but the shipped eggs are having so many losses. Shipped eggs have already been stressed so the fluctuating temps may have just weakened them too much too finish.

I have rouen hen and a buff orp drake, pretty sure they make a color sex link =) going by the August surprise hatch. Well our hatch is done 6 perfect little ducks, 1 pipped at the wrong end =( didn't make it and 1 got "glued" to the inside of his shell so I helped a bit, two duds I blame on power outages at the beginning and halfway thru the hatch. Not a bad first duck hatch, seeing as they sat in the patio for almost a month before incubation =)

Sorry I'm so behind on updating!! He is still alive but not out yet, I probably cracked him open too early but he's ok, definitely backwards so I would have had to help anyways. It's still touch and go, he's going to have to externally pipp so I can figure out how he's laying. If he doesn't do that then I have no way of helping him out without causing him to bleed out. He better pip himself ::sigh:;

By the way congrats on your 3 eggs doing well!!! If I remember correctly I don't think I had to help any of mine hatch from that batch. Maybe one....
