Hi all, my pekin/Aylesbury developed a limp around 6 days ago and there is significant swelling to the middle of her toe and what I would presume is the ‘ankle joint’. On her outer toe she had a little mark which was a small piece of thorn I have removed and the swelling has gone down on that part. She is walking but reluctant to put pressure on the ball of her foot. She has been inside and we have been giving her twice daily water therapy. She’s absolutely well in herself, eating and drinking fine though she hasn’t laid an egg in a few days however I think this could be down to stress. She is still limping today and the swelling remains around the ankle joint/ the middle toe. Do you think it’s a possibility she has sprained or broken her ankle or do you think the entirety of the limping/swelling could be down to the thorn? Her foot is hot to touch which to me is saying an infection. Please let me know what you think!

Update: I have her booked in at the vets for 6 though they are not an avian specialist vet. Any advice would be beneficial!

@Miss Lydia
I have tagged a member who can maybe give advice. With swelling and hot to the touch I would think infection as well
Hopefully she gets better soon
Thank you :) It's peculiar that the swelling is most prominent on her middle toe and around the ankle joint so it leads me to wonder if the thorn has caused some infection and in turn some swelling, and that maybe a potential sprain has exacerbated the swelling? I'll make sure I tell the vets tonight that I'd like some antibiotics and anti inflammatories. Thank you for your well wishes :)

Hi, I’ve just been to the vets (which is not an avian specialist) and he has given me kesium tablets, are these okay for my duck to take? I know they are amoxicillin but they are chewable tablets for cats and dogs so was just wondering if they’re safe for my duck to have?

I know my ducks been given amoxicillin before just not in tablet form
My girl is hard to get a pill into so now I crush it up and add a little colloidal silver in a syringe
You could use water if you do struggle
I only add 1 ml of liquid

Hi, yeah it’s really odd cause it’s beef flavoured too? Just hoping it does the trick, I’ve bought a little feeding line as I had great success with one beforehand. She hasn’t laid an egg in 5 days but I’m thinking that’s probably down to the stress and her regular routine has been rattled
