I have a 3 year old welshie who has never shown interest in raising a family. She has built the most luxurious nest in the coop. She is sitting on it in the morning when we let them out and check for eggs, but leaves with the rest of the ducks. At some point she returns to the nest, which never has any eggs in it, and sits in it for most of the day. What is her deal? Is she just avoiding unwanted amorous attention? It’s been over a week, if she was going broody wouldn’t she have started laying some eggs in her nest?

It sounds like normal broody behaviour.

Are you going to give her some fertil eggs?

She finally had had an egg in the nest, my son brought the egg in with the rest and today she is over it. No more nest, no more sitting. The other Welshie was on a nest this morning with 3 eggs, but didn’t go back to it after the pen was opened for the day. It’s like they are sort of broody, but just not really committed. All the eggs are probably fertile. I’m reluctant to let them hatch any because I already have more ducks than I need and too many males!

That is a nice update!
