Duck With Swollen Cheek And Recessed Eye

Just looked up "beggars lice" and this one »Cenchrus longispinus« is the species i have encountered in the Colorado prairie! It bores through your clothing and make you bleed and you only figure this out only after you've walked a mile into the patch and have to walk back out for a mile and be tortured again. People there called it "Gentle Annie" - what a misleading name!
I’ve never heard of it nor seen it...that I’m aware of.

And this was the stuff that Blanca Duck brought back home: Stickyweed! Poor Blanca could barely drag the big clump she was caught in along and was quacking loudly for help!
It looked screamingly funny but i did my best not to laugh out loud. - There's nothing worse than a woman's wrath... :lau
Oh yes, I know that stuff well too!

Our beggar's lice are tiny, maybe a quarter inch across, soft and green and don't have spines like that, but the dog gets them by the dozens, and they do bite! The cockle burrs were about an inch long, hard and brown (well, green at first), and they bite hard when you handle them. Very ouchy!

I've seen that but didn't know what it was called. Thanks.

Trust me: You don't want to get to know this plant! It was one of my worst experiences with mother nature. After walking for a mile i sat down and removed hundreds of those spiny seed capsules out of my jeans and i knew on that on the way back to the car i would collect another hundreds of them. Pain and discomfort is much more unbearable when you know it is coming for you!

I remember our cats when i was a child often came home limping due to some of this stuff. They were feeling so miserable and there was not much you could do other than cutting them out of the fur.

Quinny appears much better today. She has been with the other ducks all day. Her eye still appears weak, but the swelling is gone, I believe. Thank you all for you help and concern! Quinny thanks you too!
