Hello, my duckling fell and now she is walking backwards. She is almost an one month old Pekin. Her legs look normal to me but I’m not an expert so that is why I’m coming to you. She also got injured by some ducks/chickens (I’m not sure which.) I am treating that and she seems to be healing well from that at this point. I put her on some probiotic and vitamin water that has the basic nutrition needs for a duck to have. She didn’t eat for most of the day yesterday but by the end of the day she started to eat which gave me relief. In her brooder she has a heater and paper towels to walk on. When she is on a towel or carpet she still walks backwards. I’m at a loss on what to do.

:welcome So sorry about your duckling sounds like maybe she hit her head? any way you can put up a video so we can see what she is doing? You'll have to put the video on you tube or Viemo then copy and paste here.

Both legs look good no swelling, limping? walking backwards sounds neurological so If It was me besides making sure the little one doesn't fall again, gets rest and time to recover. If you have a TSC close by there is a liquid B complex that is for cattle but we give it orally and it does wonders for leg and brain health it just might be a good support right now while your duckling is recovering. Make sure she is on something that isn't slippery too like a towel or the rubber shelving stuff paper towels may not give her traction. the dose for the B complex is 1 ml over something tasty like meal worms ,chopped tomatoes just enough that she gobbles it down with the b on it and get full dose.

Thanks! I do have one close by, I’ll go there today and see if they have it in stock. I hope she didn’t hit her head but it is possible. I’ll see if I can upload a video. I don’t see any swelling in her legs. Would an injury to the hip cause it? I wish I was there when it happened. I feel so guilty about the whole situation.

Things happen, I really have to hold onto my ducklings to keep them from jumping out of my hands I actually transport them in a box now when we go outside they are so lively. I don’t think a hip injury would cause one to walk backwards but I could be wrong. Is a vet an option? Have you examined around the hip area for any signs of out of socket? Have you put her in some warm water to see how she floats and swims around. With supervision of course.

Unfortunately, a vet isn’t an option. I’ll check to see if she floats in some water. It doesn’t appear that it is out of socket but I’ll check again.
