Duckling hatch count down :) ~ 1 week to go

The second buddy hatched and has eye stripes like a Rouen would have. Very interesting colors are coming out in these ducks.

I think Pekin genetics must have something weird going on. We got gorgeous ducks that looked nothing like either parent when our Pekin slipped a couple of her eggs into a broody's nest.

They are huge!

These guys were offspring of a Pekin and a gray drake who was hatched from eggs sold as Australian Spotted, but clearly had a different dad than they thought.

So, on the paternal side, there's some unknown DNA, but even so, all of the ducklings he fathered with the other Aussie-mix ducks either had a mallard look, or were solid gray.
Somehow mixing those genes with the Pekin's made these two.

They do look big! Hope your hatch pulls through!

Today I pulled 5 ducklings to put in the brooder. One family will be getting 3....and just like me...will be keeping two. 1 duckling and 3 eggs are with mama. Mama wasn’t to happy but now has some quality time with one of her babies. Mama got two days with her babies and it still didn’t seem like enough. The ones we are keeping are in a brooder. I know...most people might keep them with mama but we had some things to work around and this option seemed best. My problem is gender. I really don’t need any boys and if I had too one boy would be okay. I vent sexed them but all look like girls so that prob means I haven’t gotten the hang of it. I might take them all to a vet to tell me what gender they are so I make sure the ones I pick out to keep are girls. Besides that they are doing great and have finally found the joy of water!
