Ducks and their treats - go figure!

My ducks hate apples but they love all berries and chopped up hard boiled eggs with the shells- but they only eat the large pieces of shells. But their favorite is worms.

She doesn't actually eat the orange peels, she picks the leftover orange out of them(we have a 3yr old here that just sucks the juice out of the slices). That's why the peels are all over the yard.

The treats are basically what the duck is able to chew...

like apples...no way. No teeth..no apples. If you bakes a handful or boiled (?) to make them soft...maybe. I might try that and let ya'll know.

Soft centered fruits like squash, cucumber (fav) and melons.
They WILL eat carrots if they are cooked to be soft or run thru a food processor and disguised with cabbage & lettuce. Whenever I need to hide something in their food I'll run it thru the processor with cabbage and hide it there. Mix all that with the usual feed. I also run seeds thru to break them open so the ducks can more easily eat and digest the seed. Like 'no waste' seed blends...the meat is exposed and the hull/shell removed.

Ducks don;t have teeth, but they do have that one long bony ridge that is like a mono-tooth that they can use to bite and hold something. It can get fairly sharp so don;t test it often.
Minnows every once in a while...they seem to enjoy watching the food move around. Its more challenging than a bowl full of cabbage.

Funny...mine hear that food processor and they know something good is on the way and start chattering...Buddy will even walk inside to watch and stand there hoping for a sample. Beats chopping up greens and buying special seed blends. I cut my feed cost in half by using the processor.
After some failings early on with the proper level of certain nutrients, they get good greens everyday now and less of the sac-feed. It doesn't take that much to mulch a head of cabbage and blend it with some alfalfa pellets and seed. Happy ducks. They'll lick the bowl clean.

my ducks loved corn, on and off the cob. it was amusing to watch them peck at the cob to try to get the pieces off. it kept them occupied and me entertained as well.

Could you feed ducks mostly veggies and just a small amount of their regular feed? Would you be able to save quite a bit of money if you fed them mainly vegetables? I wonder if you could do the same for chickens? Feed is so stink'in high nowadays!!

Try collard greens. My ducks love collards.

In the summer, I grow snow peas and the ducks get the entire plant.

Hard items, they won't (can't) eat. They want things they can easily tear into small pieces. If you have hard fruits and veg, get some geese. They love apples, melon rinds, squash.....

Save money by feeding veggies? Have you got a free source of veggies? Because veggies cost a heck of a lot more than poultry feed. And no; about 10% of the diet as fresh fruit and veggies and the rest should be a balanced feed.

No, I sure don't. I just wondered. If we could grow anything out here than I'd just grow a garden for them, but it wouldn't be worth my time.

My ducklings are so picky and won't even eat grass for heaven sakes!
