ducks pleas reply

1 I live in upper/western NY and it can get up into the high 90s (F) and my rouens, Pekins, Welsh, buffs, khakis, and call ducks all do fine here

2 Yes, Don't freak out and start thinking you have a drake if you start seeing your ducks mount each other, Ducks are very sexual and the hens will breed each other if there is no drake around, And if you do decide to get a drake, I would never suggest having less than 4 hens for 1 drake, When keeping multiple drakes I like to have at least 6 hens per drake to avoid over breeding problems,
3 My khakis and Welsh harlequin ducks are by far my best layers, The buffs and rouens are pretty good too, Runners are also great layers
4 Yes, It's very important for ducks to have water, Especially on hot days, All you need is a kiddie pool and they should be fine. Ducks should have a deep enough water source for them to clean their nares out always.
5 I feed my 50+ ducks normal Layer feed and they do just fine.
6 If you have shade and cool water out for them 24/7 then they should be fine/

:frow Austin area here. I had just females for a while and now have a few drakes. Drake’s complicate things so if I had a choice I would go for 3-4 hens. I feel like you should always have at least 3 because things happen and you don’t want a lone bird.

You don’t “need” a pond for swimming but they really do need to be able to get into some type of water every few days. That being said must have water deep enough to blow out their nares all the time (I don’t have water or food out overnight).

My Cayuga has been my best layer followed by my runners. My white layer who is suppose to be an awesome layer sucks and my Welshie did well.

When it comes to heat I make sure they have fresh water, cool treats and shade. I’ll let the hose run and make mud for all my birds and make electrolyte drinks when it gets really bad. This year was awful and I know several people around me lost birds to the heat. I think most ended up with fans in their coops.
