Ducks with special Needs

I was able to get pretty close to Elliott today and got some good pics. I know he has good hearing and that he knew I was nearby, but he let me take photos.

Elliot is beautiful, was he born blind?
Thank you! Yes, he was born with one underdeveloped eye and the other has been cloudy since birth. It's puzzling because he's the only one of about 25 ducklings that had this eye problem. He was such a lively, intrepid duckling, though - he used to lead his 6 hatchmates around...even though he couldn't really see. He's become a very nice, big, talkative drake.

I must have missed the first time you tagged me!
Here is DJ's story, she has had a rough life so far!
She is a Muscovy/Peking mule with a crest and is currently about 2 years old. She seemed fairly normal when she hatched but developed a bad case of wry neck (head was facing completely backwards!) shortly after and had some trouble walking. She actually got her name (which is DJ Spins) because she would walk in circles constantly, the poor thing. We gave her lots of B vitamins which helped tremendously but her head is still cocked slightly to the side.

Because her head has always been cocked to one side she has had problems with the eye that faces up (always exposed to the sun). She had a couple recurring infections but they always healed quickly. The most recent one she had caused her to go blind though. Well not the infection itself but one of my Peahens basically pecked her eye blind because the infection caused some white buildup in the corner of her eye. She had to wear an eye patch for a day or two so it could heal enough for the peahen to leave her alone. Poor little pirate duck.

And on top of all that, she also had a bad case of angel wing when she was developing. No matter what I did, she was always able to wriggle out of the bandage I put on her. I finally got it to stay but I must have made it too tight because she started to limp when I took it off. So I fixed her wing but gave the poor girl a limp for life.

Despite all this, she still gets around just fine. Not too fond of people though with all the poking and prodding we've had to do to her so we just let her do her thing. She hangs out with her two hatch mates and they all seem happy together.

I also have another special needs duckling named Beverly. She has had a slipped tendon since hatch. She's only about a month old so her story is just beginning...

When I get a chance (and if I remember!) I will post some pictures!

It sounds like DJ has definitely had her challenges (clever name, even though it sounds like she doesn't spin anymore), but it also sounds like she has a good life.

How about an update on Beverly when you get a chance? I hope she's getting around ok.

It's awesome how well he does. You know he wouldn't be doing that good if it wasn't for those who care for him. That makes all the difference.

Sorry to hear about her ear - can she hear out of it, or could it just be a cosmetic issue?

Glad to hear she's blossoming! She sounds like a girl with attitude.
