Putting the gravel down around the pool wouldn't keep it from getting dirty, because they will go out and bill the dirt, then run back to the nearest water available and then sift wbat they are holding in their bill. Also, if ya have the sound of a waterfall going on they will be jacked up all day long....they are attracted to the sound of splashing or running water and it sure does energize them. If your chickens are confrontational, then the ducks will yield to them and move away from them....they like to maintain a buffer between the flock and other critters....our goats however, are mesmerized by the ducks and will circle them to not disturb them.....they will walk straight thru me to get to something they want, but will walk around the ducks....crazy beasts!!.....:gig

It will be shut off at night.. I friend of ours lives deep in the Forest. The sound of his attracts bears and bobcats during the we hours. Plus it is a large pump. running it 24-7 would jack up our utility bill. It won't be running as long as it was the first month , after the first power bill.lol

I am a new duck owner. I got three ducks this July. My main reason for having ducks is eggs. I ended up getting 3 girls (lucky me)! I LOVE them. They never cease to make me smile. If I feel upset or crappy, some time in the yard with the ducks is the best medicine! They are messy and have destroyed areas of the yard around their water dish and pool. I find water to be, hands down, the most work. Keeping up with it, making sure it is fresh (I can't say clean). I keep them in a 600+ square foot yard surrounded by electric netting and it has worked perfectly for predators so far. Winter will be another story when I have to take the net down and they are confined to their new (in progress) 10 x 12 run.

The most difficult part of all - not getting more ducks!!! (until we have made it through our first winter)
