Dumb question I am sure- food and water INSIDE hen house or not?

Our three 12 week olds have a coop & run is the same size as yours, and the feed and water hang outside under the house. I won't close the door at night until the temps get below 30 degrees however because we have cold hardy heavy breeds.

Wow, so glad I asked. What a lot of thoughtful information- thank you!

Phyllis- you leave the door open, because the run is secure? I hadn't wanted to since either they are not feathered all the way or the never will- no feathers under their wings and other odd spots. It is down to 50 right now in the eves, but will be 30-040 overnight the rest of the year. Do you think I should ever close the door? Mine is secure- the floor is 2x4 hardware except a 2 foot hole in the middle.

Thanks, Jayne

I always close the door on our coop at night just to keep slithery, creepy critters out. Mice can always get inside the coop if the trap door is left open. Our run is really secure but not 100%.
Always shut the door for saftey of the chickens. Also our chickens water and food is left outside. JMO

Food and water are inside the coop - but it's large, 10'x10', plenty of room for all of it, plus I want to keep the food from attracting any other pests like mice, squirrels, etc.

I keep their feed and water inside the coop too, but my coop is larger than yours. Also, I keep a waterer out in their run.

I keep water and food inside for the hens who are chased off by the others. The food gets eaten by someone because I have to refill it every couple days.

I keep the feeder and waterer inside the coop. I live in the woods, and the chipmunk population here is atrocious. I left a full chick feeder outside once and it was empty in under two hours.

All food and water are outside in the run for my girls. There is never any food available overnight for other creatures as I fed what they will eat in one go in the morning and then again in the evening and then they are free range in the day.
