Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

it's just that they put that in an article about backyard chickens, which is giving us chicken owners a bad name. they're lumping us in with the hatcheries and factory-farms, when we really couldn't be more different. I'm totally against factory-farming.

Let's face it, any meat production on a lg scale has an ugly side. It's not fun to think about what many of the animals go thru. That being said, I have family in the cattle business in cal and what they will do for thier herd and the lengths they go to too ensure thier animals are healthy is never talked about. Any ranch/ farm is 24 hrs. No vacations no off days. Let's remember that the animal is a commodity and the better it's taken care of, the better the return to the rancher. I am a Huge advocate for humanly treating any animal but I'm not going to stop eating eating chicken cuz roosters get the bad and of the stick nor will I quit enjoying red meat. Someone else posted something about homosapiens eating meat as part of thier diet. Last I knew we all have free will n the right to choose. Do I wanna kill my own food? No. Do I think others who do have that right? Absolutely

I'm 30 years old and have been a vegan since 17... I'm also a nutritionist and personal chef and organic farmer. I'm not the one you need to lecture on the diet of 'early homosapeins" and you should really check out the true reasons to be vegan- or at least eat mainly a vegan diet. virtually no heart disease, cancers, or diabetes for vegans, also has been shown many time to reverse all three. My neighbor has grass fed beef and i truly respect his old fashioned way of rearing them, on grass in wide open land! That is truly a rarity though. Factory farms are singlehandedly destroying all of the fresh water on the planet, flooding our rivers with disease ridden manure from feeding the cows an unnatural diet of non-grass items and medicines and growth hormones. I'm not even going to get into the problems with the GMOs they are fed. Alright no need to respond, I've got the jist of this place, and it's just not for me!

to continue the thread though,
the dumbest thing I've heard is an Amish woman say she's never heard of anyone keeping a chicken as a pet. And she had very numerous chickens caged up on their farm with a crowded factory farm looking setup. How can a chicken owner not have at least one pet chicken! they are truly a commidity, eh? That's quite sad.

I agree w your reasoning for choosing your diet and won't argue the points about hormones given. I have educated myself on both sides of the issue, I simply wanted to make the point that we all have the right to either consume meat/ poultry. I, personally prefere not to eat meat 7 days a week. I feel better physically if I only eat it 2/3 times per week but I'll also say I do love a thick juicy steak every now and again. I wasn't attacking anyone for thier choices but you did seem a bit offended by my post so I do apologize if you were. I thought it was quite clear n easily understood. All n all it really doesn't matter. ;-)

Many people could argue over many of the points made in your comment, it states your opinion, I heard opinions are like heads everyone has one. Many people would say in their opinion chickens are a utility animal bred for egg production and/or meat. That being said I understand that there are some breeds that are in essence "show" breeds and the egg production is just a bonus if you get a few.....

My son and his wife decided to go vegan and have forced it upon my two grandchildren and his mother in law. They have all lost weight (good thing) but my grand daughter has taken on that pale sick look. She used to have a beautiful color in her complexion but not any more and her grandmother says that the kids do not seem to get enough to eat. Correct me if I am wrong but don't vegans steer completely away from any animal product in their food? Why is it that you have chickens? Is it true that you can not get all the vitamins and nutrients needed from a strictly plant based diet? I know my son and his family are now taking a lot of supplements so how is this a healthy choice if you need to help it along every day. Linda McCartney was a vegan and died of cancer. Rate may not be as high but it happens. All 6 of my hens are my pets they get the same attention my dog does and I have one that has not laid enough eggs in almost a year to (in some peoples minds) keep her around. Some people raise their birds for food but they are loved and taken better care of than some kids in this country, they eat well and have good homes till they meet their fate, the cycle of life. They are great stress relievers and provide a lot of entertainment not to mention the extermination of bugs and other critters they catch and they mow the yard with the fumes from the mower.

I agree w the relaxation part of having chickens. Mine haven't started laying yet but I still go out several times a day to visit n give treats. We all might have diff reasons for having them but I think the whole vegan debate could continue for eons, my question is why do u have a chicken pic in your profile if your 100% vegan? Just a bit confusing as it seems an odd dichotomy with your personal preference......

So true I have had this conversation with my son. They have been at it maybe 8-9 months now the kids do not have a choice in the matter and that bothers me. My grandkids want eggs cheese and other things that I feel they should include or at the very least let them have it a couple times a month.

Uriel stated that he or she is an organic farmer maybe this person is a vegetarian and not a vegan as stated then having chickens would make sense. I would like to know what they do with the eggs that the chickens on the farm produce.

Going to fix me a virgin screwdriver...
