Don't you just LOVE it when people make assumptions?

Assumptions?? Can't be because *everybody* KNOWS you have to have a rooster to get eggs.

~AND~ Quote: When showing people chicks that I wasn't sure were male or female yet, they asked "Why don't you just, you know, look underneath them?".

Why, that would be .... obscene. Have they no respect for a chicken's privacy?

It's jokes like this one people won't eat farm fresh meat and eggs like the people here raise.
They're Falling Over
One day the old farmer and his wife invited the new preacher and his wife to dinner. They accepted and when they arrived they were flabbergasted. The old lady had fried chicken, baked chicken, BBQ chicken, chicken pot pie, and every other chicken dish available. They ate until they were about to pop, thanked the couple and started to leave. When they walked outside they noticed a chicken dragging itself around and then it fell down. The preacher quickly summoned the old farmer and screamed "Something is wrong with your chicken, it fell over!" The farmer replied "I know. They're dying faster than we can cook 'em and eat 'em."
Had an Aunt by marriage who refused to eat meat at her in laws (my grand parent's house) because she was taught in home ec. in high school to only eat usda graded meat, and what each grade meant. My uncle had to inform her most farmers butcher some of the beast animals they have and sell the lower quality stuff (or at least the farmers in that area did it that way) and she changed her tune fast.

And don't forget about the great fertilizer produced as well! My garden never did this well before.

Chickens are the best for grasshoppers too. We had monsters at our house, you could literally pull their heads off and they would still run around. I haven't seen one in the 7 years since we got chickens.

That really helped our tomatoes, until the chickens decided that tomatoes taste just as good as grasshoppers.

We have gotten this comment 3-4 times now - "Wow, you are raising chickens? You guys are off the grid! If there is ever a disaster you will be so prepared!" LOL. If there is a horrible disaster we wouldn't be able to get feed for the chickens or water from our electric powered well and eating our 5 chickens surely wouldn't last very long!

Hahaha I get this all the time too - up until recently I had 5 chickens and a very small (90cm x 180cm) veggie garden. Um... sure... I'm going to keep my family alive on 5 chicken breasts and 3 broccolis!!!

Chickens also help to get rid of slugs, snails, black widows, june bugs and potato bugs. Have not seen one since weve had chickens, then again ive not seen one flower in my garden either..... Hmmmmmmmm

The best one is chiggers! I have never had a chigger in our yard from the day we brought our chickens home. I don't know how they see them but they really keep them at bay.
