No doubt ... yes yes ... greens! Perfect, although I believe the wife might have let it slip that the lady across the street bring mice over that she's trapped. So we'll just have to tough it out without her buying our stomach upsetting eggs. And oh yeah, the 'real' food issue no doubt comes into play...

I am having an egg issue myself. I am waiting impatiently for my young pullets to start laying BUT....
My laying hens have stopped laying in the coop, and I CANNOT find the eggs!!! My birds learned to hop the fence from my rooster (now I open the fence so they can go in and out in hopes they'll start going back into the coop to lay) so now not only am I not getting eggs from my young birds, I am not getting them from my adults either. I imagine eventually I will find an enormous cache of rotten eggs somewhere on our five acres.... :/

Oh, I *love* that. It's right in there with citiots. Perfect!!

I'm in the process of curing/converting one of them now. We were at a cook-out last weekend and he brought his own veggie burgers because "meat isn't healthy". I would venture to guess, however, that the heritage, grass fed, pastured, non-injected beef I eat is healthier than his veggie burger. I wish you could've seen his eyes bug out when I told him about commercially raised chickens, with their clipped/burned beaks. He really choked when I told him about commercial "free-range" chickens. I told him his assignment for next year is to grow ONE tomato plant in his yard; a cherry or grape tomato. He looked at me like I suggested he move to the woods and live in a lean-to. But, he's "organic", by golly!!

Meat isn't healthy....I'd say the fact that we have canines is proof to the contrary. Nature knows FAR better than we do what we should or shouldn't eat.

Mmmmmm....Steak and eggs......I'd just go with the vegetarian chicken thing, and tell her all your chickens are vegans (like they'd ever lol).......That might actually be interesting to see her response lol
My sister won't eat our eggs because they might have eaten an earwig or something.

(That's my little emoticon trying to keep my lips sealed tightly after that comment.)

ETA: In the children's book I'm reading, one character says "Chickens don't eat flies!" Well, that's just ignorant and silly. Luckily DD knows better than that.....

they are most likely starting their yearly molt, when they lose thier old feathers and grow new ones. Usually tkes about a month, so birds and get pretty bald before their new ones grow in, there is a picture contest every year, the frizzles usually look the worst

true, i think we are supposed to eat meat
I understand people not wanting to eat store bought meat because of how animals are treated in mass production facilities. I absolutely get that. Not eating meat altogether is a personal choice, and I couldn't care either way whether someone eats meat or not. What pushes my buttons are those that think YOU shouldn't eat meat, even when it comes from your own animals.
As with most things, there's a lack of balance.
I think we can be a part of nature and do as nature dictates while still respecting nature.
I love my chickens as much as I can allow myself to do so knowing as I do what they are ultimately for.
I give them a good life. Their happiness is a priority for me, THE priority. I think it is a good exchange to make that the priority for everything they give me.
My love for them, their treatment here before I harvest...I believe that is doing as nature dictates with an absolute respect.
Sorry...I am prone to ranting. :p
