BYC members are a wonderful, generous, and caring community, who are always ready to offer aid and prayers for those who have suffered terrible losses.

Unfortunately, BYC has found it necessary to prohibit fund raising on the forum, so members who wish to offer help to another member should do so privately through PM or email, please.

Please note that this is not directed personally at any members who have posted in this thread and generously offered to help. It is a rule that the staff find particularly difficult to enforce, especially when long time members are affected.

ETA: I have removed references to donations from the thread and have reopened it so you can follow along with this dog's story.

Thank you SpeckledHen for opening this thread back up. My appologies for not following the rules. I'm impatient and at times just want to help get things going rather then stand back and just talk talk talk.

The vet didn't come out this weekend, I've had food poisoning all weekend. I signed on earlier and the post was locked, now it's open, I will let everyone know info as I get it. His health wouldn't allow him to fly right now, he has time to put on some weight and I'm going to worm him this week to make sure he didn't get something out scavenging or something. Steven is getting too attached to him, I told him I can't afford to feed another mouth but that if he can buy 3 months worth of food for him to fatten him up some while we get him taken care of he can stay here for that time. Steven leaves in January for NMMI, so the time frame is pretty good there.

That is great news. Do you know how they transport? Flight, transport company, or volunteer(s) driving?

Thank you for looking into this and helping to get this pup to Florida.

Unless the pup is special needs, deaf like Katie and Kandu, 90% of the time they use volunteers for driving. Once he is vetted, shots, neutered and health certificate, all things I sure Kates vet can do, it would only take a matter of maybe a long weekend to get him from NM to FL with volunteers along the way.

They don't like to fly dogs unless they are going into the cockpit. Most airlines will not ship animals if the ground temp at time of departure or landing is going to be higher than 80* anywhere along the route.

Kate & Janet, keep an eye out for an email from Katrina!!!

You mean Steven will suck out the remaining puppy goodness?

Oh well, Puppy-hood is a brief and fleeting business anyway.

Maybe Steven can start working with him on a leash and simple commands. Frodo will be getting obedience training when he gets here, so the better he can handle the simple commands the easier it will be for him and the more he can learn.
We are calling him Frodo, but what are you all calling him?
(My mother called a dog 'puppy' for so long it became her name.)
And if he becomes an animal that you all need, then I understand. It is all good.

Coyote, we got the E-mails already. Who knew dog adoption was such serious business? We are ready when Kate and Steven are.
...But now I feel I am prying a dog from a boy's hands...snif.

OH! This is VERY, VERY important!
This is seriously important.
I have found that if a dog does not learn how to play fetch when it is young, It just won't. I had a stray golden retriever -a RETRIEVER- that we got around the age of two. He would not touch a tennis ball. My other dog lives to play fetch. It keeps us all exercising.

Some dogs play some don't, but I think the earlier you give him a ball and play with him, tug and toss, then the better off he'll be and the longer he'll live.
Please have Steven teach him how to fetch.
I need a dog to tell me, 'Stop what you are doing and come play with me.'
I get tunnel vision and try to work until it is done, but nothing is ever done.

And again, if this was meant to be your dog and not mine, that is fine. I understand. He just needs a good home.

I would be concerned about him not getting enough socialization. He's out in a dog run by himself. If I remember, he is a little skittish and afraid of the other dog(s) in the house.

I think it would be important that socialization be worked on in addition to getting weight on him with the best food possible. (grain free in my opinion).

It would be sad if the only attention he gets is being fed twice a day out in the kennel. He will have a tough time being handed off to many many strangers on his road trip to Florida if he doesn't get socialized to many people, rides in the car, walks in a park, etc.

He is in a kennel in the backyard with my other dogs around him to visit through the fence. He has never been in the house. He is being socialized, slowly. The food he is getting is excellent food. Yes it would be very sad if he only got fed twice a day and ignored the rest of the time,,, I'M SURE GLAD I AM NOT THAT KIND OF A PERSON!
