Dun/Chocolate Orpington Babies????? Post your pics here!!!!

The Dun gene isn't dominant to the black gene it creates a co dominance with the gene to create the dun, just like with blue. If it were a true dominance then whether the bird had one or two of the Dun genes it would be the same color.

Have you gotten many khakis from your birds?

Also I might be one of the only ones, but I am working on getting true chocolate bantams to fit the standard size.

For those reading along, Dun vs. Sex-linked Recessive Chocolate is explained at this link:(I took this off of another thread.....thanks for posting Spangled)
http://www.chickencolours.com/Brownies & Khakis.pdf

Here is an article that is very thorough about explaining the Dun color. Anybody interested in the color should read it. Dun is dominant, it is dominant over white and black thereby it dilutes black. The pictures may look like black, but there is a BIG difference between the two. If I were to take these birds and put them beside a true black....then you would notice the difference. Plus, they are only 3 months old. Their still babies and may lighten up later on. Also, I will keep my Dun because I would love to have some Khaki babies....so I'll keep mine for sure....LOL Not gonna give up on my Khaki project! It takes a ton of patience to create a color...so got to hold the line on my Duns. It's not instant gratification, but well worth the wait when it happens!

Yep rockingpaints...I think everybody who has gotten the chocolates are breeding them back to some larger blacks (English and Continental). I think even Christina was going to take some of her chocolates and breed them back to her fantastic blacks. Its so funny Nellie....I've gotten some gorgeous English Blacks too! I've also gotten several other colors as well in the English. The Lavender English are gorgeous too! As well as the Blues! Just love those fluffy butts....LOL Good luck on your breeding everybody!

BillieJo21 how did your hatch go with the chocolate eggs that you got from Christina...I hope well! Put some pics on here! We'd love to see them!

Hey OSUman!

My bad.....Maybe I should have been more clear with my words, but I was just quoting the verbage from the article that I included:

Quote: Dun colour is autosomal, it looks/acts the same on the hen and the
cock. Easy. Dun colour is a bit of a weird gene because its located
on the site where dominant white is located too. In difficult words:
dun colour is an allele of dominant white. What can you do with
it? Nothing, just knowledge. You won’t get a dun coloured from
dominant white birds, unless its already in the bird or you have
a spontanous mutation in your pen. That’s how it once went. It
popped up and is preserved by some breeders because they thought
its a nice colour variation. Dun colour is dominant, its dominant
over dominant white and black and thus it will dilute black.

I was speaking of color....not genetics. With the genetics.....you are absolutely right. So thank you for clarifying that. I'm so glad we've got people like you on here to help keep everything straight. I'm definitely not a genetics guru and so glad when people step up to the plate to explain the genetics. It can get very confusing at times to say the least!

I haven't been able to produce Khaki yet, but I haven't had the birds that long either....so I'm not ready to throw in the towel just yet and I truly believe that Dun has a place int he gene pool....so I'm hanging onto mine.

Also, I love the bantam chocolates too! Congrats on your breeding project to keep them to SOP. Would love it if you would share some pics. I bet they are gorgeous!
