I HOPE i DIDN'T DO SOMETHING TO HURT MY BIRDS. A COUPLE OF THEM SOUND LIKE THEY ARE GETTING A COLD, CHEST RATTLE WHEN THEY BREATH. NO RUNNING NOSES OR EYES. EATING AND DRINKING AND ACTING AS NORMAL. WHAT DO i DO?

I would keep a close eye on them. possibly there lungs are irritated from the dusting. if symptoms continue or worsen I'd treat for respiratory infection . in my flock for respiratory illness I like to use Tylan50. tylosin or tylan50 is an excellent choice for respiratory symptoms. dose is for large birds 1/2cc small birds 1/4 cc given once daily in the breast muscle for 5 days. egg withdrawal period is 7 days after last dose. Tylan50 works great for respiratory symptoms. the dose is more controlled than a water soluble antibiotic and not contingent on amount drank like water soluble antibiotic. it also gets into the blood stream much faster. you can purchase Tylan 50 and syringes at the feed store for around 12 dollars a bottle. do NOT worry that the bottle says for cattle and swine. MANY poultry owners including myself successfully treat for respiratory illness using Tylan50. which is the antibiotic Tylosin. it is geared to target respiratory issues. its a very good and successful antibiotic for respiratory symptoms. so I would observe the birds and if symptoms continue or worsen then I'd go ahead and treat for respiratory illness. but I'd give it a chance to see if its a irritated from the dusting first. once you distinguished that its not just a iteration and is in fact a respiratory illness then I'd treat them. but give them a day or so to see if it was a result of a iteration from the dust. if it was you should see a improvement in a few days
if no improvements or any worsening then I'd treat for respiratory illness at that point. if anything worsens you should treat immediately. that's what I would do if the birds were mine. so if no improvements I'd then start treatment. I really hope this was helpful. I wish you the best. I hope you see improvements very soon! God bless.

Thanks so much for the reply. You really sound like you know what your talking about. I've never given ANYTHING a shot.. but ill do it I guess.
After reading some of the older post I think that may be what it is that I have irratated their respiratory with the dust. we also Sunday changed to pine bedding in the coop and the run, and being concerned about lice I used DE and spread it all over their bedding , in the nest and in the pen so they could get it on them when they dust bathed. So I think maybe the combination of those changes has irratated some of them. Im freaking out! What signs should I look for tha will tell me they are worsening. I have children and normally you look for runny noses a, lethargy and coughing and a fever. Well you cant tell if chickens have fevers so Im just gonna use my instincts.
Ill get some tyan as you said just in case.

hi there. yes worsening would be coughing mucus in the nose swelling eyes discharge from eyes worsening with sneezing and flinging mucus from the mouth. after reading about the DE mixture I'm beginning to think its an irritant from the dusting but to be safe watch for any more symptoms and if it does not improve then I'd treat. I was also nervous when I gave my first breast muscle injection. what I found to be very helpful is IF you need to give the injection have a partner hold the birds wings down keeping them calm and still then use a alcohol swab in the injection area. what this does is part the feathers and exposes the breast skin in a clean clear view.it works very well to expose the skin. use the keel bone as your guide you want the injection to go into the muscle only. not too close to the keel and not too close to the wing of course avoiding the crop completely. think of how a chicken looks when its clean right in the breast muscle. it goes very fast and believe it or not the bird won't even flinch when the injection is given. but you will have your partner holding the wings and keeping her still and calm just in case. you likely won't have to do the respiratory treatment but just in case and for the future you will know how to do it
have everything set up before hand meaning the syringe is filled to the correct amount of units the alcohol is ready this way everything is set up and ready then catch the bird. everything will be all handy and ready.I find this makes things easier. I hope this helps. good luck and God bless

You know I'm going through the same thing almost. The only difference is that I noticed one of my Roos has a raspy sounding crow and he's sneezing and also has like a chest rattle. I had seen some worms in the poop so I was thinking maybe he has gape worms or some kind of parasite so I dusted all of my birds with seven and I gave a round of ivermectin yesterday and nothing has changed everything's the same but now I've noticed one of my sitting hens has the same symptoms. It's strange because there are no other symptoms. They eat fine the poop looks fairly normal they drink good and seem to otherwise ok. Any one out there in the chicken world got any suggestions????
