Farm Animals are regulated under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA) only when used in biomedical research, testing, teaching and exhibition. Farm animals used for food and fiber or for food and fiber research are not regulated under the AWA.
So according to the Feds the farmer can do as he or she pleases with their animals as long as they are not being exhibited etc.

I have looked in California and coudn't find anything on coloring animals.

Yes, it's banned here in Florida - but it's still done frequently.
Our neighbor did it last year, and her husband's a policeman.

Finally got pictures. Chicks are about 5 days old. You can see as they feather out, its the normal color.
The yellow chick I used about 0.5 cc. The blue chick I believe I only did about .25cc since it was the first one I did. The yellow is a salmon faverolle male over a light brahma hen and the blue is a sf male over a brown leghorn hen.

Are you absolutely sure about this Cowboy? Does 'live chicks' not mean chicks that have already hatched? Are you sure this actually applies to chicks still in the embryo state? Is a viable hatching egg seen to be the same as a live chick in the eyes of the law? Surely not? The wording of this looks to me to mean that dyeing a chick in the way everyone's discussing would be okay as long as you kept the chick till it has feathered out and lost the colour...

Are you absolutely sure about this Cowboy? Does 'live chicks' not mean chicks that have already hatched? Are you sure this actually applies to chicks still in the embryo state? Is a viable hatching egg seen to be the same as a live chick in the eyes of the law? Surely not?
