Dying chicks

I lost another one overnight. An Ameraucana. Ugh. I started Corid yesterday afternoon, so I guess we'll see how it goes. Is a cocci outbreak common in chicks? I usually let my broodies do the job, but I really needed more hens, so I bought these.

Coccidia is not that common in very young chicks, due the fact that they still have antibodies that were passed on from their mothers via the yolk. Heat stress is a much more common killer of young chicks.

I will ask too, how is your brooder set-up? Pic??

Don't have a pic, but it's a large tote/tub. Newspaper bedding, chick starter & water. Temp between 95-98. Everything is changed often, several times a day because of the bloody poop.

Is the tote about 95/98 all over?? If so thats to hot--for sure if thats including the water and feed area. A brooder Should have a heated area and the rest is unheated. Think of a mother hen----she only heats a area about the size of a plate----the chicks go to that area to warm---then they venture away from the heat to eat and drink--go back to re-warm. Some heat the whole brooder/tote with a big red heat lamp----it will/can kill the chicks. Solid sheets of Newspaper is bad for their legs. At least put paper towels down if you do not have pine shavings or dirt.

The problem with totes is that they tend to hold in too much heat. And they tend to be too small for chicks to effectively move away from the heat. It should only be 95* directly under the heat lamp. The brooder needs to be big enough for the rest of the space to be about room temp, otherwise the chicks can't escape the heat and will die.

Sorry should have said their warming area is. They can get out of their heated area to cool.

They aren't huddled or piled up. They are normal playful and alert. Then they die. Ugh.
