Dying chicks

They aren't huddled or piled up. They are normal playful and alert. Then they die. Ugh.

Huddled or piled up is a indication of being to cold. To hot is trying to get behind something to cool but they can't if the whole brooder is heated. You did not say if you were keeping the whole brooder 95/98 or just one end?? What kind of light are you using?

I am having the exact same problem!!!!!!!!

Mine are kinda lethargic and then they will die. I think it is coccidiosis. I am trying medicated feed to see if that helps.

How old are yours? How is your brooder/heat set-up?

It is a heat lamp and they are a week old.

Listen a broody hen only heats about the size of a plate---if you only got a few chicks---take that heat lamp bulb out(when it cools) and screw a regular 60 watt, 40 watt or 75 watt bulb in it and drop the whole fixture down inside one end of the brooder a few inches off the floor(SECURE)--check temp----, put water and feed on the far side. Life for them will be a lot better.

EcoGlo 20 chick brooder. They aren't hiding. They're happy and playful. Then suddenly lethargic, puffed, won't open eyes, won't move, bloody poop. Then die. I'm thinking cocci from the symptoms so I'm treating with Corid.

EcoGlo 20 chick brooder.

OK---that answers a lot of questions. !! Now that the brooder part is figured out----have to see if the chick problem can be fixed. Have you give them any sand? If not go get a handful from the kids sand box or beside the road. Give them a little in a pile and sprinkle a little in their food tray.

The Corid seems to be helping. Bloody poop is almost gone and no one died yesterday or overnight! Yay!!!
