East RIver - South Dakota

I've been giving them watermelon and misting their run, and the girls a bit, with the hose. And I put a couple of frozen two liter bottles of water in their run to help cool it off. I've been turning them loose later in the day because there isnt a ton of shade in the yard. They are definitely doing better than my plants!

What breeds does everyone have? I just lost a bunch of next year's breeding program and am now faced with reorganizing my plans.

I'm thinking I might be in the market to buy some extras if someone has anything that catches my interest. I'm wide open to new breeds and ideas at this point.

Hi East River chicken parents. Just found this thread! First time chicken parent. Purchased my 6 fuzz balls at the end if March. Built a coop over a 8 week period. They are 24 weeks this wk and have all began laying! Sadly, my 5 lb terrier chased my roo into the cornfield surrounding my house 5 days ago. He was a great protector for my girls. We came by him on a total accident. A lady in our community got him by accident (only wanted hens). Turns out he was nearly the same age as my girls, idk if that is better or worse for the girls. We only had him about a month and it only took him a couple days to settle in. He had a great personality and not agressive toward me or my kids. ( I had only ever heard negative rooster experiences). Now trying to decide if I get a new roo or if that will be to disruptive to my flock to adjust to a new roo.Not to mention idk where I'd get a single roo. My girls came from a farm supply store.Anyway, that's my story. I look forward to conversing with you all!

Tonia K what part of SD are you in?

Are you looking for a specific breed of rooster? I have some extra olive egger crosses in Flandreau. Its about time to thin them out so if you want one let me know.
