East RIver - South Dakota

I have seen that warning too but I also know of a number of families that raise them together. Many people put chick & poults together b/c the chicks show them to food and water. If it were me I would probably get a couple and see how it goes. Don't know if you don't try.

Hey my youngest just told me she wants to possibly show one or two of the chickens in 4-H. Any suggestions on what kind and where to get them?

I'm a new member and a SouthDakota Poultry Fanciers Association member but I've lost my directory. I'm looking for some D'anviers bantams for my daughter for 4H, also looking for some Iowa blues. Any help or info would be great, Im in the Clear Lake area and have had layers for a few years now. Just need some for show.

How are everyone's chickens & other livestock handling these crazy temperature swings?

I can't believe it froze Saturday night and it is now 95*. Good news is it made taking away the heat lamp on Monday that much easier haha

You gotta love the beautiful days while you get them! Yesterday was so windy my chickens just huddled inside the coop and panted

Today I have a flock of happy birds

Our coop is up on cinder blocks so that is usually their refuge when it gets hot. This has been such an odd year and I feel so behind, the grass is mid-calf and yet the trees are still behind; probably from last years drought. I waited to garden because of the late frost warning and ow everything needs to be done at once.

My new chicks are coming next week I am excited but also have mixed feelings. It is time to butcher the roos from my January order and I feel bad for my hen. I know it is a human emotion but she was the only layer left after a dog attack and she is just now starting to hang out with all my "surplus" cockerels. Now I am going to butcher them to make room for the new chicks and she will be alone again. I had hoped she would go broody so she could just raise them and I could solve 2 problems at once but no such luck...shucks darn!
