East TN: Cocke County Poultry Show May 7, 2011

We will be there. I plan to bring some white silkie chicks ranging in age from 6-8 weeks. They are from Jack Ferguson's line. Mothers include birds from Sunshine Silkies and Shorty Polston.

My hubby decided to jump on the chicken boat and would like to get some chickens for eggs he can eat, I would also like them to be pretty so I was thinking Orpington in anything but buff. Will anyone have chicks or eggs they do not have to be show quality just from an NPIP home. I don't really know much about breeds other than silkie or showgirls but would love to get him on board the chicken train. Right now he just sees eggs he can't eat and chicken that don't act like or look like a chicken. lol. PLEASE help me out.

I think me and my daughter are going to the show/sale. We've never been to one before. We currently have 3 silkie hens and 1 roo. We got our first egg last week (YAY!), so this is all pretty new to us. We'd like to buy a couple more hens. I'm wondering do they only sell show chickens or do they have chickens in all price ranges? Do they start selling from the time they open, or does the sale start after the show? Thanks!

There will be egg birds, show birds, eggs, chicks. Anything and everything, wide range of prices.

As far as NPIP, you will have to ask each seller. That may be harder to find.

Doesn't the law actually state that any bird or egg sold that is not going directly to slaughter must be NPIP? I have to do more research on the exact wording...I do know for certain though that there are plenty of loop holes and that many venues do not enforce it. For example there is some wording to suggest that "over 4 months of age" must be tested for at least Pollorum, Thyphoid, & Avian Bird Flu. That over 4 month thing throws me off. I do know that Mr. Gary Daily II was a tester in Tn though. He may be able to point you in the right direction. You can get his info from the dept of ag probably at http://www.tn.gov/agriculture/regulatory/contact.html or Charles Hatcher should be able to help as well with NPIP certified flocks in your area.

Well, Bairo if that is correct and I do not think it is, all the poeple selling at flea markets and First Monday are breaking the law. Well, most anyway. L know most of them are not NPIPed.

Travel over state lines is the difference, I think, and even that is not strictly enforced in poultry.

I am NPIP to help with sales of hatching eggs, and because I want to show in multiple states. But if I only show in TN I could just let my birds be tested at a show every 90 days.

In order to show in KY I have to be NPIP.
In order to show in NC I have to be tested within 30 days of the show, regardless of NPIP certification. So I doubt I will ever show in NC.

In GA they had a tester there, both shows.

Those are the only states I am certain of right now. As I branch out I'm sure I'll learn more!

With the new laws to show in NC from out of state your birds also have to be tested for AI within 14 days of an NC show. OR You have to be declared AI free by your state.
