Easter Egger club!

Rose is overdue for her 5 week portrait. She is so gosh darn beautiful! Her white plumage is just brilliant and very soft.

what is auto sexing?

You can tell males from females at hatch due to the barring gene . Two on left are male one on left female . Males have a large irregular white head spot due to 2 barring genes . Females can only have 1 barring due to the barring traveling on a sex chromosome . This is why females have a small white head spot or no spot .

I have 1 EE chick. She is about 3 months old. Sorry, but I do not have a pic on my computer at the moment. I will try to get one though. Her name is Chicklet.

Hi, I don't know if this is relevant, but my EE's seem to be the most aggressive of the 8 Sisters and the most shy of the bunch. I use to be able to hold them, but they are now 6 weeks and very timid of me. These two Rule the ROOST. How long does it take for them to warm up? I've tried meal worms and they all go freekie and run around the brooder. Any suggestions? CJ

My EEs can't decide if they're lovey dovey, scared skittles or aloof owls and they're a year old! Just be calm and have treats and they'll learn to trust you... In their own way :)

Thank you Amelia Egghart (cute name!) :D  What a relief! I thought we were doing something wrong! What treats do you suggest? CJ

What kind of brooder are they in? At 6 weeks they should be feathered enough to be out and about and scamper off some of that energy... depending on your location, of course.

I'm lucky enough to live near a bug farm, so I get fresh mealworms and other creepy crawlies that are packed with good protein and nutrients. You can wander your property and collect tasty bugs yourself as well. I take a bug jar and collect caterpillars and earwigs mostly. The adult birds help me out :) then I bring my catch indoors to the brooder to the baby chicks (right now my babies are barely 2 weeks old so they're indoors).

They prefer to chase live bugs than eat the boring dried ones!

My Grumpy Gilligan is absolutely adorable. She sneaks up on you like a cat - she'll stop dead still if you look at her - then continue creeping forward.... If you're shelling peas. She LOVES peas. I'll leave a pea on my knee and slowly....very slowly.... She sneaks up, grabs it, dives away, gulps it down, then starts the long process all over. She isn't flighty, she just thinks she's invisible if she stays still. LOL. but she's also cuddly! She LOVES my SO. If he reclines, she jumps up on him and crawls up onto his chest add up under his chin. Then she takes a nap. She's a BIG bird, too! Well, only 6 lbs but she's got a long body and huge wings.

You never know for sure what you'll get with EEs, but you WILL get personality!
