Hatchery Easter Eggers are not mixed breeds or mutts. They are what the Araucana and Ameraucana used to look like, before they were refined into proper breeds. Most Easter Eggers do not have any true Ameraucana in them. More accurately, it's the Ameraucana that have Easter Egger in them. That's what I said: It's the offspring of any blue egg layer and any brown egg layer. The blue egg layer used is usually an Araucana or an Ameraucana (although any chicken with the blue egg gene can be used)
Which I why I used the spelling Amer I cana. I also added Easter Egger in parentheses. I am also fully aware they are not a breed unto themselves, but a mixture, a "mutt".
I never said nor implied they were Ameraucanas. or Araucanas. I just prefer the name Americana to "Easter Egger" and I'm sure I spell it with the i.![]()
WAIT WHAAAA?it's the Ameraucana that have Easter Egger in them.
I helped create the Ameraucana breed . We used hatchery type Araucana ( EE ) for the blue egg gene . At the time hatcheries called anything with the blue egg gene Araucana . No tufted rumpless birds in their flocks . Just the land race type blue egg layers they are still selling . We created bantams first . We were the Ameraucana Bantam Club at the time . Then became the Ameraucana Breeders Club . Now some of us are the Ameraucana Alliance .WAIT WHAAAA?I was totally backwards then!!! Oh please correct me (love to learn) I thought the Araucana was bred to another breed (I forget which) to make the Ameraucana, who is then bred to a brown egg layer to make an EE, which some sellers purposely misspell as Americana to make people think they are getting true Ameraucana's when they are really getting an EE? I'm going to have to start my research all over!?![]()
Two very different things. One is an actual breed, the other is an unrefined, unpredictable landrace 'type'. Hatcheries just never bothered to update their marketing when the Ameraucana became an accepted, recognized breed. What!? I thought that EEs and ameraucana were one breed and that EEs were called ameraucanas.that so cool.i guess I'll have to do more research
Easter Eggers came first but they were called Araucana. Then, they were called Ameraucana, once the Araucana became a recognized breed. When the Ameraucana we know of today, became a recognized breed, most hatcheries simply didn't bother changing what they labeled their birds and continued calling them Ameraucana, even though they did not come anywhere close to meeting the breed standard.so which of the 3 breeds came first?
hatchery type Araucana ( EE )??
now you say the Araucana is an EE?
The first available in the USA were what we now call EE . Not sure when the tufted rumpless became readily available . They were very rare and hard to find in the 1970"s . Araucana were admitted without the usual qualifying meet . Good ole boy system . Many of use did not like the lethal part of tufts . 2 copies of tuft = dead in the shell chicks . Rumpless is a mechanical fertility issue in our opinion . So we set about breeding for acceptance the bearded tailed type . We voted on the characteristics we wanted such as leg color and feather color .so which of the 3 breeds came first?
