Wow they look like my Bronze Turkeys

I had a chick with shell stuck on his/her head. Son#1 wanted to name it Shelly or Sheldon when we learn it's gender. I said by that time, the shell will be gone and we won't know which one it was. LOL

Here are some fresh out of the incubator . Still refining the chick color . Girls on the left boys on the right . Selecting for dark females and light males . Double barred males have a larger irregular white head spot . Females can only be single barred and have a small head spot or none . Two barring genes make the males lighter . There is some wheaten Ameraucana in the mix causing the light females . Wheaten (yellow) chicks are a poor background for auto sexing . The idea is to sell sexed chicks locally . I raise the males for meat . No baby culling here . 4 females 3 males . 1 in each group are too light for breeders . Wheaten influence . You are not too far away . So Hi neighbor .:frow
Hey, we are neighbors! That's great! I love finding new chicken people locally. Makes me feel not so crazy around all my non-chicken people friends!!!

If you end up selling any of your EEs or their eggs, let me know. Sex linked babies would be so great!!!

On Sunday I moved the chicks into their next stage of housing, Cooper's old crate that he no longer uses, I zip tied some old mesh onion bags to the bars so the chicks don't trap their heads in the bars or try to squeeze out, put an old 250 watt IR bulb over the top, and let the chicks go in.

They're loving the extra room, the perch, and they seem calmer than when they were in the old Sterlite tub (which they outgrew in a little over a week and a half).

And just tonight, Cooper passed a major milestone with the chicks, when I went to change their water, he stuck his head inside the crate, and rested his chin on the hay bedding, gazing longingly at some would-be friends, he was so excited he was shivering in anticipation....

Don't worry, I had my hand on his collar, ready to pull him back at any sign of aggression..

The chicks approached him cautiously, not knowing how to deal with this "predator" (no, there was no 'choppah to get to da) ;) they had to to get to their feeder

After a couple curiosity sniffs, Cooper happily laid there, tail wagging furiously as the chicks inspected him, one accidentally jumped on his nose trying to maneuver around another chick, and another pecked Cooper's mustache looking for food, aside from a furious bout of wagging, and a happy gaze (because he has seven new freinds now!) he didn't react at all, no growling, snapping, biting, licking, no reaction aside from a curious sniff and a tail wagging at around Mach 1.2....

He's getting some treats tonight and a second ride in the car (he loves car rides) for being such a good boy with the chickens
