Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Quote:
If you mix a pea combed bird with a single combed bird, the "3-row pea comb is a male" rule doesn't always apply.
But, quite often the cockerels have larger combs early on, and get "puffy" and red, while the females stay either yellow or slightly pink.
I have hatched a lot of pea/single comb birds, and the best way to tell the gender is their feathers, when they're a little older.
I usually check as their new feathers are coming in, to see if there's any bright (often contrasting color) shiny saddle, neck or wing feathers.

These two are some pea/single combed young cocks from a few years ago:

And again, one of this year's guys - again a single/pea mix
it's not a clear photo, but can tell the comb just looks like a single line.
So far, it looks to be a pullet.

On the other hand, this chick has a distinct, small 3-row pea comb,
as it's father had a pea/single comb, and mother has cushion comb.

It turned out to be a hen

So, I wouldn't give up hope until it's a few more weeks older.
The small-combed chicks are generally harder to tell, especially if are two types mixed together.
I give them about 10 weeks before I make a final decision. The single-combed ones I can tell much earlier, and there
are some of this year's small-combed cockerels are very obvious, but it's also come with lots of practice!

Is Loki a girl or a boy? I know it's still a bit too early to tell, but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Loki is a few days older than 5 weeks.. Always wants to be held when I go to feed him/her.. Very friendly..
Father is a EE and mother is a Black Australorp.

It was really hard getting a full picture..

Most likely a pullet. If it were a cockerel it would have much more red in it's comb.

EE cockerel at 3 weeks:

Hi All! I am new to keeping chickens and have many of the chicks in my flock figured out but I'm unsure about my 2 EE's. Can someone help? Hen or Roo? Thanks in advance!

Thanks Junebugenna. I'm sure hoping they are, I already have 5 roos and only want 1 or 2. I was praying that these were both hens.

Thanks for all of the replies.

I'll update in 5 weeks or so, or if there's some development.. Either way Loki is staying!
By then there should be something with the little group too.

I've been watching this thread, and it's been really really helpful with sexing my EE's. There are a couple I'm still not sure about though- they are now 6 weeks old.

White EE:

EE with red/brown head: (sorry it's blurry, just wanted to get comb color on there)

Olive Egger (assuming most of the same rules still apply):

Any thoughts?
