Easter-to-Mother's Day hatch-along?

The supervisor I spoke to yesterday and today has been very sympathetic but doesn’t have an explanation. If my USPS package delivery patter holds, they’ll “miraculously” show up in another day or two. Or they may really be MIA forever. :rant

I emailed MPC to find out what they want me to do next. Sigh.

Oh that really sucks. It would be driving me nuts.

I set some two weeks ago, they should hatch next week! 6 BCMs and 6 OEs, shipped from WA to OR.

Couple of notes so far:
  • Very high rate of development (I’ll do a full count this weekend). I have had high rates from relatively close eggs (ID, WA), and worse the further it gets (CA, AZ, OH). There’s a local BLRW breeder that I hope to get some eggs/chicks from, maybe next year.
  • I let them rest for just 12 hours before setting them; I’ve let them rest for longer in the past; I think I’ll move it back up to 24 rest period. Lots of saddle air cells.
  • Didn’t weigh them and if I set more eggs in the future I’ll get a scale.
  • Candling at day 8/9 it was difficult to see but yesterday was day 12 and you could see great vein development even with the extra dark shells, and chick movement inside.
  • Incubating at RH35% the eggs seemed to be losing too much water too fast so I upped it to 45-50%. Ambient RH has been 55% all week.
  • I have a Brinsea Octogon 20; in its third year of operation. Putting it on the table but with something soft under the edges or the turner keeps the noise down.
  • I hand turned 3-5 x a day the first 8 days then used the automatic turner.
  • I found mid to late April to be the best time to ship eggs for my region, before that it’s too cold and by late May it’s getting to be too hot.
Stay tuned!

Here's my Day 7 update (from last night):

Out of 26 shipped eggs set:
- 22 good, including 2 I had to patch with wax
- 1 clear (unfertilized) 55 flowery
- 1 clear tolbunt polish (with a scrambled yolk)
- 1 olive egger that had quit
- 1 BBS marans that looks like it probably had a blood ring

I had one spot that was being occupied by a DIY egg-o-meter, and on day 4 I pulled that and the first three eggs, and swapped in replacements. So now in there are:
- 22 eggs on D8 that look good
- 1 BBS marans that I'm going to give another day before chucking
- 3 replacement eggs on D4 that are showing development (i don't handle these, i just stick the flashlight against them while they're sitting in the incubator)
- 1 replacement CCL egg on D5 that *might* be a clear

Air cells are pretty loose on most of them still, but some are firming up.
I've been holding humidity in the 20-30% range because last time it was way too high, but I think I'm going to bring it up a smidge for the next 7 days.

Well, my “missing” eggs showed up today, on the “hold for pickup” shelf at my local post office, exactly where they were supposed to have been since Monday morning. So, do I go ahead and set them? They were packaged well and don’t look to have been damaged. They shipped on Saturday.

6 days is a long time for eggs in unknown conditions ... if I were you I’d contact the seller about putting in a claim with usps, especially if they shipped priority/2-day with tracking. (And if you do get the order replaced, giving your local post office a heads’ up!) But I’d also still see if they worked!

Update on my Black East Indie duck eggs I set on Easter. I had 7 come in lost two, one early quit, the other was a clear. I have 5 wiggling little blobs of life in my eggs right now. I did order 6 more in case I loose more. Everything I have read says these eggs can be temperamental.
