Are their any new shows going on soon? I would love to go to one and see others chickens and learn more. I haven't seen anything going on around here. I am kind of new to chickens.I have a flock of about 30 chicks that are 3 months old. "Bairo" I saw the pics of your Delawares and they are beautiful. I have 9 of them. They are one of my favorites as one of the roos and two of the hens like to come and set on my lap to be petted when I am outside in their field. I am trying my hand at Guineas, and I may have some soon. If my hatch goes well I may have some extra if anyone is interested. I am also hatching some Lemon Cuckoo Orps right now.
Thank you. They looked awful for the show though. I barely got started breeding and then decided to switch over due to some space limitations with getting into rabbits and wanting to work with tooooo many breeds.
I also had a horrible time with the roos (one developed wry neck, and one was so far out of confirmation that I culled him) the starter hens though were one each of Morrow, Tate, and Braden. All excellent blood. The Braden hen was sold but I still have the Morrow and Tate as well as a cockerel from a Braden roo over a Morrow hen. I would really like to see them go to a good home were they have an opportunity to work with more diverse blood. If you are interested in breeding to standard and need those birds I will happily give you a good deal on them.

the red I got seems to have adjusted just fine to her new home but the EE is very skittish. Anything I can do to help that? She stayed in the coop til this afternoon & I finally got her out & put the coop door down. I'm keeping our dog away from the coop too...

Hope I don't drive y'all crazy w all my newbie questions

You'll never be able to drive us crazy; most of us are already there

As Daph said...this is completely normal. She is still adjusting to the big change and you have to remember that she really just got used to her flock here as she is only 13 weeks old. The red you got was the #2 hen here and over a year old, so she is much more confident.

@ANBS & Treehugger

Welcome. Please feel free to jump right in at any time with comments or questions.....usually there is someone here that can give advice no matter the situation, as we have all had experiences with different aspects of the hobby. For example: I know absolutely nothing about bantams but there are many here that do. Now if you want to talk chicken illness I can usually point you in a good direction (only someone like me would be interested in chicken A&P I guess) LOL
We try really hard to be a tight knit and helpful group and welcome new folks with open arms. We recently had a nice get together picnic and I think at least a dozen of us were able to make it.....Thanks to Stang volunteering to plan the next one, we are well on our way to another get together (just an excuse to talk chickens and eat really)

SO STANG WILL be getting that info expeditiously

Haha, I am glad to be in good company then!

Thank y'all for reassuring me :) i just want to make sure I have happy chickens :) mr.library told me I should chill out & that it was normal but I wanted to ask the experts. Lol.

Another silly question....I checked on them when they went in the coop for the night & one was in the nest box & the other on the floor. I will try to get a pic of the inside to see maybe if my roost are in the wrong place?

So glad to have a nice group of folks to answer all my questions!

I thought of you tonight, library. I opened the brooder to let my baby Marans free range for the first time outside of the playpen. Neither one would budge. I tapped my foot, whistled for a minute or two, paced to the other side of the yard, then my patience was gone. I yanked them out of the brooder and plopped them in the yard where they froze still as statues even though the older chicks and banties were partying up a storm all around them.

I managed to resist the urge to force their beaks down and drag their feet across the grass for them, but just barely. Patience is not one of my virtues, unfortunately.

Chickens will roost in the nesting boxes if they are higher than their roost or if there's not enough roost space. Mind you, I have some hefty girls, but they want twice as much space as the suggested 12" per bird. Sometimes they just develop a bad habit and you have to block off the nesting boxes at night until they figure out there are other places to sleep that don't make the eggs gross.

Bring on the questions. I only have three years experience, but I've managed to cram a whole lot of mistakes in that time.

I think chickens are like a lot of animals. They are in a new environment, new smells, new sounds...etc. I always give new ones a few days to get use to things. I don't handle them much..just let them chill. There are some who do great then some who are a bit shy. I am sure she will be fine after a few days. If your dogs are around your chickens a lot too I would walk my dog on a lead a couple times a day so that they can get use to them as well. Never worry about asking questions librarychicken. We have a wonderful support system on this forum...they have been a true life line for me many times. Good to have a new member!!

Sorry, I forgot to put text with my above picture. This is one of my 10 wk old Delaware roos his name is Cruley and he likes to ride on my shoulders. He would have been destined for the cook pot because of his color pattern compared to breed standard. But, because he has the best personality and is the most affectionate of all my chickens he is safe! Plus my little girl already said we can't eat him. I just thought I would post this pic of him checking out the camera because I thought it was funny.
