On the other situation with the dog coming on to the property......

I've been in the situation my self to try and handle it diplomatically also. It never seems to work out and I can not figure out why. I think you should do what your heart tells you......but if it ever happens to me again Im just going to shoot it and call the police to explain that I heard a ruckus and when I went to investigate, the dog turned on me and I feared I would not be able to make it to safety and had to use deadly force to protect myself.

Unless you live in a built up area, I wouldn't say squat to anybody.

I tried that in the past and all I got was, "Our dog doesn't get out of the yard."

When their dog turns up missing and those folks show up on my door step with tears in their eyes, I told them that I hadn't seen their pet in a while.

To avoid this, I quit asking around.

I just kill the dog and get rid of the carcass.

I would also wash away any blood off of the grass and ground if you follow this technique.

It may save your barn from being burnt to the ground one night while your gone to Sunday night church service.

ahh yes.

Shoot, Shovel, Shut-up. That works as well

You want king snakes around your home. They prey on copperheads! I catch up everyone I can find and release here. We have lived here 22 years and I have not seem a copperhead on my farm yet...knock on wood. I use greenhouse shade cloth on my runs with bantams and it would be ideal for chicks. I cover the top and around the bottom. It keeps everyone in, keeps overhead predators out and keeps the sun off a bit. It is cheap so you may want to consider it. I have hawks that nest over behind me....They have circled a few times and I holler at them til they move on. So far my problem has been a very intelligent raccoon. If I don't trap him tonight I guess I will be sitting with my rifle tomorrow night. Good Luck!
I have a green tarp over the pens for shade and rain protection. My problem is when I let them free range. I just keep them locked up now. The only ones running now are the wild ones the broody had. Once was 12 this mornings count 7. Tonight I'm going to catch them and toss them in with my others. I have 2 10x10x6 kennels I have converted to chicken use. Last night I did a sex check on them and I think I have all the hens in one now. I still have 2 I'm not sure about. They have big combs but aren't red like the roos but bigger than the other girls. In 2 weeks I will know for sure when they crow. Looks like I have extra pullets of the blue olive EE. They also have feathered shanks. Dad is a splash maran a big boy. But he has failed in his duties. He sat 3 feet away from the hawk while it was killing his baby. All he was doing was making noise. But he runs up on me and the kids! Next year I will be looking for a new rooster. Not sure which way I want to go. A blue EE or blue maran. The ee would make the eggs go back to lighter green and the maran would make them darker green maybe back to brown. Maybe by then I'll have a new coop and have 2 flocks. See how things start growing. LOL
I still have BCM roos and Blue olive EE pullets/cockerels. They need to go. The hawk has helped itself to quiet a few. I broke out the bottle rocket! So next time I see him in the yard he won't like it. I figure if I can't kill him I sure can make him unhappy.
I also read where they don't like fishing line. They can see it but some how blows their mind. So I was thinking a few lines across my yard from the big tree in the middle to the woods by the creek would do it.
Just throw the spool like you would TP

up high so it won't be in the way of anything. I don't need to cover the whole 2 acres just where the chickens mostly hang out from the coop to the tree to the creek/woods.

King and Black Snakes are hail on copper heads and rats, but both of them will suck eggs and swallow chicks.

They are no real threat to larger pullets and hens.

A couple of years ago I heard some high pitched squalling going on behind the house and saw a 6 foot black snake going over the top of a brush pile with a wharf rat by the head that looked the size of a 3/4's grown house cat.

"Eat well, ole man", was my thoughts at the moment.

I am in need of some advice, we have a dog situation thats been going on well over 2 months but has recently gotten out of control. The people about 3 houses down have 2 dogs and now a puppy that run wild, last night they destroyed a broody hen's nest and tried to carry off a bunch of stuff. The heeler one will see one of us in the yard and run up the road growling and barking into my aunt's yard who lives beside us, they are chasing are cats and everything. Talked to animal control 5 times and obviously has done no good. I hate the idea of killing them but im out of ideas. We cant even walk our dogs now.

I stopped the dogs from the next farm over from coming over to chase my cat and chickens. Everytime I saw them out a screaming bottle rocket would be shot there way. They come to the edge of the driveway and just stare at the chickens. Air horns work well too. While walking your dog you can carry bear pepper spray. They wont try to attack you anymore after a good spray. Just make sure you are upwind ;-) Animal control is pretty much a joke in the county. You can always take the owners to small claims court for damages to your property. It takes up time and you wont get much but the point is control your dogs or you will have to go threw this drama everytime. But if they are on your property and you can catch them take them to the pound. When the owner comes to claim them they have to pay the fine. If they are not fixed here in Hamilton county your fine is more. Plus if they are not currant on shots or don't have the county tags that's more fines. A friend of mine had his dog picked up. It cost him around $250 to get his dog back. Odds are the dogs that are running wild aren't up to date on shots and stuff. And they may not have the money to pick up their dogs. Then you will be dog free or at least the owner may tie them up for next time. Either way you go, someone will not be happy. And that someone shouldn't be you and your family. Good luck

OK, so I checked into finding a park nearby but to insure a pavilion it'd be $30.

Maybe we can all meet at a restaurant or something? If we do the picnic idea, we'd have to just find an uncovered picnic area I guess? Maybe we can go to one of the parks with a large playground for the kids to be unleashed?

Which ever is fine with me.

I would be willing to kick in a few bucks (dollars not rabbits) if some of the others wanted to also.
$30 split several ways is not even as much as I spend on Dr. Pepper every day.

What kinda date were you thinking?

Is Big Ridge $30 to reserve a pavilion as well? I know we had a b-day party there back in March and it was just first come first serve as long as there were no prior reservations on the pavilion.
