Does anyone know if there is a place around that processes chcikens? I am new to chickens, but my wife and I are raising some to eat. I wouldn't be able to do the initial kill, but I could do all the rest. Is there any places locally? I really would like to learn how the whole process works. I just get to attached so I know I couldn't kill them. I might end up having to give them away, but that would defeat my pupose of not having to buy chicken meat at the store.

As for the dog problem, I had a friend who had the same problem. Animal control could never find the dogs when they came. They gave my friend traps to use and they were able to trap the dogs and then animal control picked them up. Maybe your local animal control would do the same thing. Not sure where you live, but this was in Loudon Co.

Wow, I miss a few days being on and pages add up quick.

Librarychicken! I live much farther south. I get my feed @Lucky's Barn on 58 hwy Georgetown,TN. A bit of a drive for you. The feed store I use to go to was in GA taxes are half in GA then TN. But they closed last year. I miss Cloud springs Feed and Seed!
I also used Cloud springs feed and seed when I was living around there, he's been trying to sell for a while before he retired. I bought hay from his farm this past summer, I found out he also breeds show batams. There is Wilholt farms on wesleyan rd, go past the collegedale airport to the end of the road, take a right, make a second right, store is a up the farm road look to your left, 423-236-5573--they have no signage--Used their hay before, excellent and the prices are great, the faithway feed I purchased was 11.50 a fifty pd bag. also the southeastern co-op in cleveland is good--I've rented the horse trailer from them when we bought our donkey.
Bairo, I found that both my just purchased Black orpington's have bumble foot. I have soaked, removed the leather covering, banaged Penelope--No pus and no hard core. Gave both a pencillin shot, repeating every other day for a total of 4. I believe Penny is almost healed by the time we found it, waiting to see after her shots as the scab is almost gone on it's own, any other suggestions? Besides look at the chickens feet before purchase??

Ask your wife to do it.

Let her kill and bleed them and you can dress them out.

Sounds like you have it under control. You probably put some triple antibiotic ointment on before bandaging as well. You can do that or you can make a boric acid salve that works good. 1 part boric acid and 5 parts vasoline and bandage. 3 or 4 days of that is usually enough. Make sure your bedding is fluffy enough, that you dont have extremely high roosts, and that your roosts are at least 1 inch or larger (for a full sized hen). On a big bird like that I would not want to see them on anything less than a 2x4 on edge which is an inch and a half

Terry, im still looking..sorry I got tied up outside

About the hawk problem, you can get or raise a goose, they will protect your flock from hawks and they kill/eat cooperheads

. I'm wanting 2 myself--just trying to talk hubbie around.
Bairo, filled each opening with triple antibodic, tonight penelope will get saoked in espom salts with a tablespoon of bleach added. The roost is 2'x 2 1/2' (sanded and edges removed from a 2x4) I think, filed smooth and 10 inches off the poo deck which has a ladder. I believe from the size that they have had these before the 3 weeks ago when they were purchased--penny's scab was hanging almost off when we discovered these on saturday. They are on a concrete pad with several inches of flake pine shavings, which is sprinkled with PDZ, and sevin dust, the nest boxes have 3 inches of shavings, De and a sprinkling of fresh lemon balm branches.

haha you don't know my wife. I just need to man up and do it when it comes time. I know I can I just don't want to do that part. There was a guy who would come to your house and do it. But the minimum he would come for is like 40 birds. I don't even have that many. I have a family member that has volunteered. Also, thought about getting a small goat to put in the same field as my chickens. Anyone do this, is their usually any problem with the two getting along. I have about an acre field that I let my chickens in and I hate to weed eat.
