We got a 1/2 inch last night.

Our old gun shy dog woke me up when she was trying to crawl under the bed as the thunder was rolling up and down the mountain behind the house.

My chickens free range and I have a few 5month old roosters that are huge. I water them twice a day during this heat. I went out yesterday evening and a roo was dead in the shade. What else can you do to keep them cool?

Hey guys does anyone know where I can find Silver Campine's? I have been searching for months and can't find any. I am looking to focus on some rare breeds and just received some blue laced red wynadotte chicks and am about to recieve some silver gray dorking eggs. But the silver campine is avoiding me. I want to find a good breeder but even the hatcheries I am finding are sold out.

I don't know anyone with campines. I don't even remember seeing any at the Newport Show. I might of overlooked them, since I'm not familiar with them, though...

I'm on vacation right now, so I have lots of time...

I freeze 16 oz. bottles of water, like the little Gatorade bottles, and put those in the waterers to keep the water cool. I also give the chickens access to the crawl space under the coop. They have giant holes dug in the dirt and hang out under there. I need to put a thermometer under there, but you can feel the cool air blowing out from there. I have three fans in the coop windows to keep the air moving in there, too, but it still's only about ten degrees cooler than the outside temps, which is way too hot for my fatties. They jog in, lay an egg, then hustle right back out. Well, except for the SIX dummies that think that this is the perfect weather to be broody. The coop is a mass of those heavy, outdoor extension cords.

Oh! I also alternate putting Nutri-Drench and Oxine in their waterers. The Nutri-Drench is to help replace what they're loosing with all the panting and lack of eating. The Oxine is to keep the icky stuff under control that grows in this heat. (Thanks for the tip, Bairo)

I don't mist or wet anything down because I don't think it helps a whole lot with all the humidity we have and I don't want to make a jungle-like environment for cooties to grow.

I wouldn't go through all the trouble but my black orps are susceptible to heat stroke because of all of the fluff and my wyandottes are susceptible because of their rose combs.

I'm sorry you lost your cockerel. Sometimes, no matter what you do, nature wins...

Hey, Stang,

I just realized that I should probably change my avatar, since he's your boy, now. You're welcome to use any of the pictures that I have uploaded of their hatch.

The reason I wet down my runs is to wet down the sand which they dig holes in and lay. It looks like a mine field right now. I think everyone has their own personal hole. I am going to try freezing fruit with water in ice cube trays to give as treats too. I read they love to eat ice.
Hopefully the rain will cool down at least a little!
